379 without assuming a spontaneous generation, the generatio spontanea. And yet, no one has ever succeeded in actually proving it.
The great masses, on the other hand, are denied the ability even to reach the sources of this incomplete knowledge and to get to know and understand the works of the intellectual giants through their own observation. For the individual sciences, they believe what is known to them as the conviction of the scientific authorities of the respective field. The farther removed the field of knowledge is from their profession, the less independent is their opinion, and it is at its least independent when it comes to constructing a comprehensive worldview. Here, mere "faith" reigns supreme, be it in the absurdity of any philosophy, be it in the latest fashionable philosophy, be it in the fundamental views of a positive religion. The need to explain the environment causally prevails everywhere, even if an explanation in even the most abstruse forms is usually sufficient.
For the philosopher, this explanation is supplied by his own reflection, but for the masses, it is supplied by tradition. The worldview of religion is this tradition. It is authoritative and social, while philosophy is not authoritative, but critical. The latter is individualistic, for it wants to create the world-picture from its own speculation (Jerusalem).
It may be that philosophy thereby returns to the result of religion, just as religion itself is the creation of ancient philosophical priests. — For our investigation, it is of interest to examine more closely the first creation of a religion known to us:
In the records in which the first historical accounts confront us, it becomes clear that it is not the rule of brute force and war that gives the impulses for the development of state and social life, but rather that alongside the material needs, which presuppose a peaceful development, the entire thought and action of the people is dominated by a unified spiritual view.

Der großen Maſſe nun gar ist es verſagt, ſelbst auch nur zu den Quellen dieſes lückenhaften Wiſſens vorzudnngen und die Werke der Geistesneſen aus eigener Anschauung kennen und verstehen zu lemen. Sie glaubt für die einzelnen Wiſſenschaften das, was ihr als die Überzeugung der wiſſenschaftlichen Auto- ntäten des betreffenden Faches bekannt ist. Je weiter entfemt das Wiſſensgebiet von dem Berufe ist, umſo unſelbständiger ist ihre Meinung, und am unſelbständigsten ist ſie, wenn es ſich darum handelt, eine zuſammenfaſſende Weltan- schauung ſich zu konstruieren. Hier herrscht unumschränkt der bloße „Glaube“, ſei es an die Unsinnigkeit jeder Philoſophie, ſei es an die letzte Modephiloſophie, ſei es an die Grundanschau- ungen einer poſitiven Religion. Das Bedürfniß, ſich die Umwelt kaufal zu erklären, herrscht allenthalben, wenn ihm auch in der Regel eine Erklärung ſelbst in den abstrusesten Formen genügt. Beim Philoſophen wird dieſe Erklärung durch eigenes Nach- denken, bei der Maſſe aber durch die Tradition geliefert. Die Weltanschauung der Religion ist dieſe Tradition. Sie ist auton- tativ und ſozial, während die Philoſophie nicht autontativ, ſon- dem kntisch ist. Die letztere ist individualistisch, denn ſie will das Weltbild aus eigener Spekulation erzeugen (Jeruſalem). Es kann ſein, daß die Philoſophie dabei zum Resultat der Religion zurückgelangt, wie ja auch dieſe ſelbst die Schöpfung uralter philoſophischer Pnester ist. — Es ist für unſere Unter- ſuchung von Intereſſe, die erste uns bekannte Religionsschöpfung genauer ins Auge zu faſſen: In den Urkunden, in denen uns die ersten geschichtlichen Nachnchten entgegentreten, zeigt ſich, daß nicht die Herrschaft der rohen Gewalt und des Kneges die Impulſe zur Entwicklung des staatlichen und geſellschaftlichen Lebens gibt, ſondem daß neben den matenellen Bedürfnifſſen, die eine fnedliche Ent- wicklung vorausſetzen, das geſamte Denken und Tun des Volkes von einer einheitlichen geistigen Anschauung beherrscht wird.
