It cannot demonstrate a lack of idealism when hopeful academics left the university 30 years ago, moved to Palestine, and there — under immense difficulties — transformed themselves into simple farmers, which they have remained to this day. Among the Jewish colonies that are flourishing today after terribly hard work, their colony is indeed the most flourishing. About the steadfastness of the Palestinian colonists in general, who have defied blackwater fever and reclaimed swampy areas through most strenuous labor, one hears only praiseworthy things. Today there are 20 colonies with 6600 inhabitants. In the 30 years of their existence, they have created a kind of self-government, have so far managed completely without soldiers, police, or prisons, and can be considered consolidated today. — That simply does not testify to an absolute lack of ideals and a lack of patriotism!
People who remain true to their religion despite the mockery and contempt they experience, despite the deprivations and hardships it imposes on them, and despite the attacks on their existence that they suffer because of it — cannot come from a people from which the last remnant of loyalty has vanished.
- The by no means philo-Semitic E. v. Hartmann rightly says about this: “Among all the specifiable faults of the Jews, there is none that could not be sufficiently explained as a historical product of circumstances, thus none that one would have to declare an unalterable accessory of the ethnological type. The deficiencies which are attached to the average Jew today and which make his social position difficult for him, stem from sources whose effects have accumulated over a long series of generations:
- from the lowliness, indigence, and dishonor of their former social position, 2. from the one-sidedness of their professional activity to date,
- from the lack of freedom, lack of rights, and oppression that still exists today for the Jews of Eastern Europe. Where openness, insistence on one's rights, and manly courage uselessly lead to certain ruin, there deceitfulness, cunning, guile, humbly servile submissiveness, disregard for the rights of others, and cowardice are necessarily bred.” 24*

371 nanerem Zusehen ohne Schwiengkeit auf andere Ur- sachen zu- rückgeführt werden können.* Es kann nicht Mangel an Idealismus bekunden, wenn hoff- nungsvolle Akademiker von der Universität weg vor 30 Jahren nach Palästina zogen und sich dort — unter ungeheuren Schwiengkeiten — in simple Bauem verwandelten, die sie bis heute geblieben sind. Unter den nach furchtbar schwerer Arbeit heute blühenden jüdischen Kolonien ist ihre Kolonie allerdings die blühendste. Über die Standhaftigkeit der palästinensischen Kolonisten überhaupt, die dem Schwarzwasserfieber getrotzt und sumpfige Gegenden in mühevollster Arbeit saniert haben, hört man nur Rühmliches. Es gibt heute 20 Kolonien mit 6600 Ein- wohnem. Sie haben in den 30 Jahren ihres Bestandes sich eine Art Selbstverwaltung geschaffen, sind bisher vollständig ohne Soldaten, Polizei, Gefängnis ausgekommen und können heute als konsolidiert betrachtet werden. — Das zeugt eben nicht von absoluter Ideallosigkeit und von Mangel an Patnotismus! Personen, die ihrer Religion treu bleiben trotz der Ver- höhnung und Verachtung, die sie erfahren, trotz der Entbehrun- gen und Mühsale, die sie ihnen auferlegt, und trotz der Angnffe auf die Existenz, die sie deshalb erleiden — können nicht aus einem Volke stammen, aus dem der letzte Rest von Treue ge- schwunden ist. * Mit Recht sagt darüber der durchaus nicht philosemitische E. v. Hartmann: „Unter allen angebbaren Fehlem der Juden ist keiner, der nicht als histonsches Produkt der Verhältnisse ausreichend erklärbar wäre, also keiner, den man für ein unabänderliches Zubehör des ethnologischen Typus erklären müßte. Die Mängel, welche den heutigen Juden im Durchschnitt anhaften und ihnen ihre gesellschaftliche Stellung erschweren, stammen aus Quellen, die ihre Wirkungen durch eine lange Reihe von Generationen aufgehäuft haben: 1. aus der Niedngkeit, Dürftigkeit und Ehrlosigkeit der früheren sozialen Stellung, 2. aus der Einseitigkeit der bishengen Berufstätigkeit, 3. aus der für die Juden Osteuropas auch heute noch bestehenden Un- freiheit, Rechtlosigkeit und Unterdrückung. Wo Offenheit, Trotz auf sein Recht und Mannesmut nutzlos zum sicheren Untergang führen, da wird notwendig Hinterhältigkeit, Ver- schlagenheit, List, demütig knechende Unterwürfigkeit, Mißachtung des fremden Rechtes und Feigheit gezüchtet.“ 24*
