346 most highly civilized for millennia, show intelligence, aptitude for learning, and acumen, and the children of the other castes lag considerably behind in this respect. Only in this way, too, can we explain the experience that often children from famous families, although they were brought into a completely different milieu in their earliest youth, have nevertheless drawn attention to themselves through a strikingly greater intellectuality and a finer cultivation of character.
We see in these facts a test of the views developed in the second part of this book. The intellect in old races that were once culturally active and have remained pure persists; but without external favorable circumstances, it is like a humus soil without care. If any vegetation thrives luxuriantly on it, it is luxuriantly thriving weeds.
If we can thus easily explain the existence of the great cultural capacity of the Arabs, then the purely external circumstances which, alongside the favorable political and economic position, determined the nature of their cultural activity, can be demonstrated even more clearly: it was the Syrian Nestorians and the Jews who had introduced the Arabs to culture.
If one wishes to recognize the influence of the Jews even on the general cultural development, one must consider their influence in the field of spiritual culture and their influence in that of material culture separately, and regarding the latter, one must also exclude the indirect influence of spiritual culture on the raising of material well-being.
Only in the purely spiritual domain is an effect on a large scale possible even for very small groups.
Progress in material production, however, the creation of economic values, the accumulation of specialist knowledge, is too closely bound to the sufficiently extensive and unhindered possibility of economic and specialist activity, in short, to the material
