From the beautiful infidel Moorish women, too, a cheerful contagion spread to their sisters beyond the mountains; the south of France was full of the witchcraft of female charm and dances to the lute and mandolin. Even in Italy and Sicily the love song became the favorite composition, and from these cheerful but unorthodox beginnings arose the beautiful literature of modern Europe.
From Provençal poetry, the direct descendant of Spanish-Moorish poetry, arose European literature.
Even Gothic architecture, which was always considered the noblest expression of the Germanic spirit, has been recognized as an imitation of Islamic motifs, as they first appear at the mosque of Ahmed ibn Tulun.*
Of course, this Arab culture and the Arab capacity for culture did not fall from heaven. We will hardly be mistaken if we attribute the great intellectual disposition of the Arabs to the fact that the race, for millennia beforehand, just like the inhabitants of the other Near Eastern countries, had taken a significant part in the ancient oriental culture, and that the wealth of their phyletic intellect, of their mneme, acquired at that time, had only lain fallow throughout this entire immense period.
For even today, completely uneducated Orientals and the southern peoples of Europe are distinguished by their quick comprehension and an astonishing genuine intellect, and the latter in particular also by a sense of tact and natural grace that is striking even in children. Only in this way can we also explain the high artistic talent of the Italians or Gypsies. In those descended from highly cultivated ancestors, we almost always find a much richer intellectual and spiritual disposition in the descendants. Auch von den schönen ungläubigen Maunnnen verbreitete ſich eine heitere Ansteckung zu ihren Schwestem jenſeits der Ge- birge; der Süden Frankreichs war voller Hexenkünste von weiblichem Zauber und Tänzen zur Laute und Mandoline. Selbst in Italien und Sizilien ward das Liebeslied die Lieblingskompo- ſition, und aus dieſen heiteren, aber nicht orthodoxen Anfängen entsprang dieschöne Literatur des heutigen Europa. Aus der provencalischen Poeſie, dem direkten Abkömmling der spanisch-maunschen Dichtkunst, entsprang die europäische Literatur. Selbst die Gotik, die stets als hehrster Ausdruck germani- schen Geistes galt, ist als eine Nachahmung iſlamischer Motive, wie ſie zuerst an der Moschee Ahmed ibn Tuluns erscheinen, erkannt worden.* Natürlich ist auch dieſe arabische Kultur und die arabische Kulturfähigkeit nicht vom Himmel gefallen. Wir werden kaum fehlgehen, wenn wir die große intellektuelle Dispoſition der Araber darauf zurückführen, daß die Raſſe schon Jahrtausende vorher ebenſo wie die Bewohner der anderen vorderasialischen Länder weſentlichen Anteil an der altonentalischen Kultur ge- nommen hatte, und daß der damals erworbene Reichthum ihres phyletischen Intellekts, ihrer Mneme, dieſen ganzen ungeheuren Zeitraum hindurch nur brach gelegen war. Zeichnen ſich doch auch heute ſogar ganz ungebildete Onentalen und die Südländer Europas durch ihr schnelles Be- gnffsvermögen und einen erstaunlichen genuinen Intellekt, und namentlich die letzteren auch durch ein schon bei den Kindem auffallendes Taktgefühl und durch natürliche Grazie aus. Nur ſo auch können wir uns die hohe Kunstbegabung der Italiener oder Zigeuner erklären. Bei Abstammung von hochkultivierten Vorfahren finden wir fast stets eine viel reichere intellektuelle und ſeelische Dispoſition der Deszendenz.
