342 true source under the designation "Indian numerals." They also titled their treatises on the subject "Systems of Indian Arithmetic." The study of algebra was diligently pursued among the Arabs; they gave it the name it bears. Ben Musa was the inventor of the common method for solving quadratic equations. In the application of mathematics to astronomy and physics, they had long since distinguished themselves. Al-Mamun had determined the obliquity of the ecliptic with considerable accuracy. Al-Mamun had also determined the circumference of the Earth by measuring a degree on the shore of the Red Sea — a procedure that presupposed correct ideas about the shape of the Earth and stood in remarkable contrast to the doctrine of Constantinople and Rome. While the latter asserted the flatness of the Earth, the Spanish Moors taught geography using globes in their public schools.
Among problems of importance that were solved, the determination of the length of the year by Albategnius and Thabit ibn Qurra may be mentioned; increased accuracy was given to the correction of astronomical observations by Alhazen's great discovery of atmospheric refraction. They worked a great deal on the improvement of time measurement, on the improvement of clocks, being, as mentioned several times, the first to apply the pendulum. The introduction of astronomy into Christian Europe is to be attributed to the translation of the works of Muhammad al-Farghani. The Arabs were also the first in Europe to build observatories.
The scientific works of the Renaissance, of Kepler, Copernicus, give the impression of genius through the apparent immediacy of their origin. Christian Europe simply does not know that these things, too, are mediated. It was this high Moorish culture that, when it spread to Italy and France under more liberal emperors and popes, produced the humanistic aspirations and the Renaissance of Christian Europe.
Among the Arab physicians, there reigned a truly surprising correctness of thought and breadth of vision. One

Man
