332 Halévy's hypothesis, presented at the end of Part I, that the Semites were not borrowers, but the creators of Mesopotamian culture, thereby ceases to be a hypothesis, but is rather the statement of the actual state of affairs.
If the Sumero-Akkadians were really brachycephalic Turanians, this would be even more welcome to those who want to see the racial value of the Jews established in a thoroughly philo-Semitic sense. These Turanians would then be identical with the Hittites; the racial identity of Sumero-Akkadians, Hittites and Jews, which would have to be established for those who stand on the ground of linguistics and craniology, would for this reason also have to lead to a corresponding judgment about the racial value of the Jews.*
We now come to know these Akkadian Hittites themselves as an ancient civilized people, who rise year by year in our esteem, who invented their own independent pictographic script in gray prehistory and who in architecture and sculpture were the teachers of the Assyrians and the Greeks (v. Luschan).
Regarding the Semites again—even if one does not count the Sumero-Akkadians among them—v. Luschan rightly recalls, "how this inferior race already had epic poems long before Homer and how it had already created magnificent palaces with artful sculptures, still admired today, at a time when the Germans still lived in caves and burrows and had barely learned to work flint into tools; likewise that a millennium later, Arabic science in Spain reached such a high bloom that people flocked there from all over Europe to study mathematics and astronomy, medicine and philosophy, geography and history at the source. So one only needs to think of Babylon and Nineveh, of Tyre and Carthage, of Baghdad and

Statistik d. Juden, 1909/VIII).
