316 of the letters is therefore essentially that each accuses the other to the Pharaoh and presents himself as the most loyal of all vassals. And the Pharaoh is besieged with pleas for help, for which he seems to lack absolutely everything.
This Egyptian rule therefore does not create a very impressive picture, and one can clearly see that it is coming to an end, that the land was thus as open to fresh, strong primitive peoples as it was to neighboring states eager for conquest.
The princes also warned against enemies of both kinds and thereby sought to obtain the Pharaoh's help. Each portrays his neighbor as a person who intends nothing other than to play the country into the hands of such enemies. As far as these are great powers, the following are named: Babylonia, then the people who at that time possessed northern Mesopotamia, thus also the region around Harran (Mittani), and the state of the Hittites. The Hittites were at that time advancing from Asia Minor against Syria and northern Palestine.
That is the general political situation of Palestine. Whether the utterances of all the oppressed hearts of the "most faithful servants of their lord" are true, we need not investigate. But their assertions alone are enough to show us that Palestine stood in the midst of the international life of that time. The Palestine of that time was not located in any primeval forest or in any desert far from the noise of world history: it stood right in the middle of it.
But which country still played the leading role in intellectual terms at that time, which culture had had the most lasting impact, is already shown by the external appearance of those letters. These are precisely the previously mentioned documents, which are written in cuneiform and essentially in the Babylonian language. It is the time when the vassals of the Pharaoh communicate with him, and he with them, by means of the Babylonian script and language. So the Egyptian Sun King makes use of Babylonian culture to send his subjects orders — can the relationship between the cultures find any clearer expression at all? In whose
