313 are in the possession of other peoples and often represent a power threatening Babylonia itself, Arabia is left to itself. Only the Euphrates-Tigris lands themselves, Syria and northern Palestine, from now on form the natural sphere of power of the Babylonian kings, of which they soon lose more and more. The peak of this dynasty's power is represented by the reign of its fifth king (around 2250).
His name is Hammurabi and among other things he calls himself King of the Amorite land. That is, he ruled, besides the actual Euphrates lands, the north Phoenician land, on whose southern border Canaan abutted. It is he who, through the discovery of his law codex which had been carried off to Susa, has attained a significance for the history of mankind which his position of power as king of Babylonia would never have procured for him.
This Hammurabi can only be the one whom the biblical tradition in the 14th chapter of the 1st Book of Moses mentions at the beginning of the Abraham narratives. The name is now distorted in the Hebrew text to Amraphel.
It is out of the question that we could ever find the name and person of our Abraham in a cuneiform document. That is excluded from the outset by the nature of these documents. They are official, administrative writings. The significance which Kant gained for the intellectual life of modern humanity cannot be recognized from the state archives of his time.
But one thing we are able, even without learning anything about the person, to recognize clearly already: What the biblical tradition meant, what great, world-political background it presupposes in these so purely personally rendered narratives, and how it conceives of Abraham and the land which he seeks out, in the context of the questions that moved the Orient of that time.
The elevation of Babylon to the capital of Babylonia and to the center of the cultural world of that time means, according to oriental view, a break with everything existing. To explain this in detail would require a special treatment
