308 Song of Deborah: its origin is dated to around 1250 B.C. The other scriptures, according to this biblical-critical or "historical-critical" school, go back to 950 B.C. and find their editorial conclusion around 400 B.C.* The entire canon is grouped around the 5th book of Moses, which was presented in the year 622 as having been rediscovered during the temple renovation, but was probably only produced then. Only with the al- leged discovery of this book, but even more so through the reforms of Ezra and Nehemiah, did today's Judaism, based on the "Law," come into being; the origin of the belief in immortality, of which the Pentateuch knows nothing at all, is of a much later date and is to be attributed to Persian and Greek influences. The origin of the monotheistic idea, however, reaches back into the obscurity of the 14th and 15th pre-Christian centuries: the exceedingly high social-ethical content, through which the speci- fic spiritual culture of Judaism leaves that of all other peoples far behind, reaches back to the time of the prophets Amos, Hosea, Isaiah, Jeremiah, who were completely original creators in this field. The biblical-critical school, however, transformed itself into a historical-critical school. From the later origin of the literary monuments was also inferred the later origin of the world of thought fixed in this literature, indeed the much later beginning of the entire history of the people itself. The entire royal period, even more so the time of the Exodus, and especially the patriarchal period, were not considered to be what they probably are—as mythically colored folk history, reworked into sagas, but on real foundations—but rather as myth pure and simple, most of the narrated events as entirely unhistorical. This was, however, an error of biblical criticism that was insignificant for its principle. Its immense merit is the shaking of blind literal belief by demon- strating how also the individual pieces of this, considered divine in theo-
- Probably, only the esoteric literature that had existed long before was transformed into an exoteric one at that time.
