295 striving for the highest in the cultural field forever, and here, with respect to the Jews, Theodor Herzl's divination may well hold true that if the Jewish people will summon the strength to decide their fate in the tendency of Zionism, it may, by virtue of its high dispositions, look forward to a new era, even more valuable for itself and for the whole than the previous ones have been. In the question of the cultural value of the Jews we can therefore come to the following conclusion: Every organic being must be most adept in the performance of that organ which its species has practiced the most, or, expressed differently, in which the most diverse engrams are deposited. A race that for millennia owes its preservation exclusively to mental labor, would have to become, in the field of intellectual mneme, one of the most valuable for cul- ture, — if, under regenerating conditions of livelihood, it could also actualize the deeper and more valuable predisposi- tions. Mneme is the stock of brain engrams. If these engrams remain in a latent state, they are the basis of the emotional disposition; if they press for instinctive activity, the result of this is intuition. If the engrams emerge from the latent state into the super-consciousness, the mneme becomes manifest, then it appears as intellect, as "intelligence"; from instinctive activity becomes conscious, willed creation, from the occult mysticism of instinctive premonition and immediate recognition becomes, by means of the "dissolution of instincts" to be achieved through cultural activity, clear, know- ing reason (see p. 254). The mneme, the total complex of partly latent, partly manifest brain engrams, is thus the basis of the emotional as well as the intellectual disposition, and from this arises the essential unity of these two categories of emotional and intellectual aptitude.

295 Erstrebung des Höchsten auf kulturellem Gebiete für immer versperrt habe, und hier dürfte in Bezug auf die Juden die Divination Theodor Herzls zurecht bestehen, daß, wenn das Judenvolk die Kraft aufbnngen wird, sein Schickſal in der Tendenz des Zionismus zu entscheiden, es kraft ſeiner hohen Anlagen einer neuen, für ſich und für die Geſamtheit noch wertvolleren Aera als es die bishengen waren, entgegenblicken darf. In der Frage nach dem Kulturwerte der Juden können wir alſo zu folgendem Schluß: Jedes organische Weſen muß in den Leistungen desjenigen Organs am geschicktesten ſein, welches ſeine Gattung am meisten geübt hat, oder, anders ausgedrückt, in welchem die vielfältig- sten Engramme deponiert liegen. Eine Raſſe, die ſeit Jahrtausenden ausschließlich der Kopf- arbeit ihre Erhaltung verdankt, müßte da- her auf dem Gebiet der intellektuellen Mneme zu einem für die Kultur höchstwerti- gen werden, — wenn es bei regenenerenden Erwerbs- verhältniſſen auch die tieferen und wertvolleren Prädispoſitio- nen würde aktualisieren können. Mneme ist der Beſitzstand an Gehim-Engrammen. Bleiben dieſe Engramme im Latenzzustande, ſo ſind ſie die Baſis der Gemütsanlage; drängen ſie zu instinktiver Betätigung, ſo ist das Reſultat derſelben die Intuition. Treten die Engramme aus dem Latenzzustande heraus ins Oberbewußtſein, wird die Mneme manifest, ſo tntt ſie als Intellekt, als „Intelligenz“ in die Erscheinung; aus der instinktiven Tätigkeit wird bewußtes, gewolltes Schaffen, aus der okkulten Mystik des instinktiven Ahneñs und unmittel- baren Erkennens wird mittelst der durch Kulturtätigkeit zu erreichenden „Löſung der Instinkte“ klare, wis- ſende Vemunft (ſiehe S. 254). Die Mneme, der Geſamtkomplex der teils latenten, teils manifesten Gehimengramme, ist damit die Baſis ebenſowohl der Gemüts-, wie der Verstandesanlage, und daraus ergibt ſich die Weſenſeinheit dieſer beiden Kategonen der ſeelischen und intellektuellen Befähigung.
