If in a racial group large enough that inbreeding does not become too close, the identity of the blood is preserved for centuries, then through the uninterrupted, constant summation of the same instinctual material, the instincts gain such power that they bring about an immense enrichment of the subconscious with predispositions in many individuals of this race. To form a correct concept of the hereditary effects of strict inbreeding, one must bear in mind that every person in 20 generations is the product of more than a million ancestors, and in 30 generations the product of 1000 million ancestors. If all these ancestors come from the same race, then the enormous summation of similar instinctual predispositions is immediately apparent. Now, instinctual predispositions that are not actualized, whose intention for activity is inhibited, since the material on which they are to be exhausted is not at all adequate for them, dam up like the floods behind a weir and, like any volition that is held back before reaching its goal, transform into a fund of feelings.* This fund is all the richer, the greater and more homo-

Just as the striving to become kinetic is, as it were, immanent in all potential energy, so too is the striving for development, for actualization, immanent in every disposition, and therefore in every instinctual disposition. If the instinctual dispositions can be fully actualized or fully dissolved by the free activity of reason, then the accompanying emotional emphasis is of no essential significance, for it then occupies no lasting space in consciousness; with the resolution of the former, it too has faded away. But the more the development of the tensional forces is hindered, the less the intended action can reach the level adequate to the disposition, the more, according to experience, grows the emotional emphasis of the conscious or unconscious ideas represented by free will or by instinct;

Wenn in einer Rassengruppe, die groß genug ist, daß in ihr Inzucht nicht zur Engzucht werde, Jahrhunderte hindurch die Identität des Blutes gewahrt bleibt, so gewinnen durch die ununterbrochene ständige Summation gleichen Instinktmatenals die Instinkte eine solche Kraft, daß sie in vielen Individuen dieser Rasse eine ungeheure Bereicherung des Unterbewußtseins mit Prädispositionen herbeiführen. Um sich einen nchtigen Begnff von den erblichen Wirkungen strenger Inzucht zu machen, muß man sich vor Augen halten, daß jeder Mensch in 20 Generationen das Produkt von mehr als einer Million Vor- fahren und in 30 Generationen das Produkt von 1000 Millionen Vorfahren ist. Entstammen alle diese Vorfahren der gleichen Rasse, so ist die ungeheure Summierung gleicher Instinkt- anlagen ohneweiters ersichtlich. Instinkt-Prädispositionen nun, die nicht aktualisiert werden, deren Intention zur Betätigung gehemmt wird, da der Stoff, an dem sie sich erschöpfen sollen, ihnen gar nicht adäquat ist, stauen sich an wie die Fluten hinter einem Wehr und setzen sich wie jedes Wollen, das vor Errei- chung seines Zieles zurückgedämmt wird, in einen Fond von Gefühlen um. * Derselbe ist um so reicher, je größer und homo- * Die Gefühle treten als Begleiterscheinung, als Gefühlston, der in- tellektuellen Elemente auf, namentlich der intellektuellen Elemente aus dem Gebiete der Willenssphäre, also besonders der Instinkte. Sowie jeder poten- tiellen Energie gleichsam das Streben immanent ist, kinetisch zu werden, so ist auch jeder Anlage, daher auch jeder Instinkt-Disposition das Streben nach Entfaltung, nach Aktualisierung immanent. Können die Instinkt-Dispositionen vollkommen aktualisiert oder durch freie Vemunft- tätigkeit vollkommen aufgelöst werden, so ist die begleitende Gefühls- betonung ohne wesentliche Bedeutung, denn sie nimmt dann keinen bleibenden Raum im Bewußtsein ein, mit der Erledigung der ersteren ist auch sie verklungen. Je mehr aber die Entfaltung der Spannkräfte gehindert ist, je weniger die intendierte Aktion auf die der Disposition adäquate Höhe gelangen kann, umso mehr wächst erfahrungsgemäß die Gefühlsbetonung der durch den freien Willen oder durch den Instinkt re-
