200 If we reach beyond the narrow borders of our European historical development and compare its main features with the development of the other parts of the world, we find as an important result of this consideration that the evolution of the various, mutually independent cultures proceeds in the same direction. In the ancient cultures of Mexico and Peru, we have the example of peoples where, completely independent of any external influence, the same social conditions developed as in Asia and Europe, solely out of the same environmental circumstances. From important thoughts and great institutions down to the most insignificant incidents of domestic life, the parallel between the American natives and the Europeans is so striking that one can only with difficulty shake the impression that some mutual communication must have taken place. The man of America progressed on his path of civilization just like the man of the old world, inventing the same institutions, guided by the same intentions, captivated by the same desires. Just as automatons, assembled in the same way, do the same things, so in organic forms equality of structure gives rise to identity of function and similarity of actions. The same natural understanding guides men throughout the world. Bastian had already emphasized that the commonality of ideas among the most diverse peoples must be traced back to the independent development of elementary thoughts, which are founded in the nature of the human mind. One of the most striking phenomena in history is nevertheless the senility and passivity of many of the most gifted peoples as soon as they reached a certain age and became overly rich in the values of the intellectual culture they had produced. Just as their warrior strength is weakened within the framework of an advanced civilization, so too do they then lose their intuitive, brilliant character in the domain of their intellectual creations.

200 Greifen wir über die engen Grenzen unſerer europäischen Geschichtsentwicklung hinaus und ſetzen wir ihre Hauptzüge in Vergleich mit der Entwicklung der anderen Weltteile, ſo finden wir als ein wichtiges Ergebnis dieſer Betrachtung, daß die Evolution der verschiedenen von einander unabhängigen Kul- turen in gleicher Richtung verläuft. In den alten Kulturen von Mexiko und Peru haben wir das Beispiel von Völkem, wo vollständig unabhängig von jedem äußeren Einfluß einzig und allein aus den gleichen Milieu- verhältniſſen heraus, ſich auch die gleichen ſozialen Zustände entwickelten wie in Asien und Europa. Von wichtigen Gedanken und großen Einnchtungen zu den unbedeutendsten Vorfällen des häuslichen Lebens herab ist die Parallele zwischen den amenkanischen Ureinwohnem und den Europäem ſo auffallend, daß man ſich mit Mühe von dem Ein- drucke losmacht, daß irgendeine wechſelſeitige Mitteilung statt- gefunden haben müſſe. Der Mensch Amenkas schntt auf ſeiner Bahn der Zivilisation ebenſo wie der Mensch der alten Welt fort, dieſelben Einnchtungen erfindend, von denſelben Abſichten geleitet, von denſelben Begierden gefeſſelt. Wie Automaten, in derſelben Weiſe zuſammengeſetzt, die- ſelben Dinge tun, ſo gibt in organischen Formen Gleichheit des Baues Anlaß zur Identität der Vernchtung und Ähnlichkeit der Handlungen. Derſelbe natürliche Verstand leitet die Men- schen in der ganzen Welt. Schon Bastian hat betont, daß die Gemeinſamkeit von Ideen bei den verschiedensten Völkem auf ſelbständige Entwicklung von Elementargedanken zurück- geführt werden müſſe, die in der Beschaffenheit des mensch- lichen Geistes begründet ſeien. Eine der auffallendsten Erscheinungen in der Geschichte ist gleichwohl die Greiſenhaftigkeit und Paſſivität vieler der begabtesten Völker, ſobald ſie ein gewiſſes Alter erlangten und überreich wurden an Werten der von ihnen produzierten gei- stigen Kultur. Wie im Rahmen einer vorgeschnttenen Zivili- ſation ihre knegensche Kraft abgeschwächt wird, ſo geht ihnen dann auch auf dem Gebiete ihrer geistigen Schöpfungen der intuitive, geniale Charakter verloren.
