178 In contrast, our considerations have shown that without exception all classical cultures came into being without even the physical presence of Germanic peoples — to say nothing of their intellectual inspiration. But we also want to approach the question of whether they even created the beginnings of their first culture themselves in their own country. Keller, the discoverer of the pile dwellings in the Swiss lakes,* pointed out that the cultural possessions of the Stone Age pile dwellings reveal a connection with Asia and the Mediterranean countries; both the domestic animals and the cultivated plants originate from Asia and Egypt. Ranke writes, "that even the most primitive metal tools or weapons point to analogies with the Far East, so that we may not assume that the knowledge of metalworking developed independently anywhere in European lands. The metal cultures of Europe have their roots partly in central Asia and partly in the coastal countries of the Mediterranean." One of the greatest authorities in the field of archaeology, Hoernes, writes on this subject: "The origin and fates of the first inhabitants of Europe during the Neolithic period are shrouded in the deepest darkness. We only know that they were indeed human beings. We do not know their original homes, migrations, and destinations, not their lineage and their blood; we do not know what languages they spoke, what groups they formed. We must take them purely as human beings. Their skull and body forms are indeed partly known; but what can they tell us? They were probably white people, but not even that is certain for all of them. "The oldest foundations of agrarian culture in Europe were created by the Neolithic population, not like the foundations of a great building in one go.
- Even if Celts are assumed to be the original inhabitants of these areas, the use of this data is nevertheless permissible, because proto-Celts and proto-Germans are considered identical by anthropologists.

178 Demgegenüber haben unſere Betrachtungen ergeben, daß ohne Ausnahme alle klaſſischen Kulturen ohne auch nur die räumliche Anweſenheit von Germanen zustande gekommen ſind — von ihrer geistigen Anregung alſo gar nicht zu reden. Wir wollen aber außerdem der Frage näher treten, ob ſie auch nur in ihrem eigenen Lande die Anfänge ihrer ersten Kultur ſelbst geschaffen haben. Keller, der Entdecker der Pfahlbauten in den Schweizer Seen,* machte darauf aufmerkſam, daß der Kulturbesitz der Steinzeit der Pfahlbauten einen Zuſammenhang mit Aſien und den Mittelländem erkennen laſſe; ſowohl die Haustiere als die Kulturgewächſe stammen aus Aſien und Aegypten. Ranke schreibt, „daß schon die pnmitivsten Metallgeräte oder -Waffen auf Analogien mit dem femen Osten hinweiſen, ſo daß wir nicht annehmen dürfen, daß ſich irgendwo in europäischen Landen die Kenntnis der Metallbearbeitung ſelbständig entwickelt habe. Die Metallkulturen Europas haben ihre Wurzel zum Teil im zentralen Aſien und andemteils in den Küstenländem des Mit- telmeeres“. Eine der größten Autontäten auf dem Gebiete der Archäo- logie, Hoemes, schreibt über dieſes Thema: „Herkunft und Schickſale der ersten Bewohner Europas während der neolithischen Penode ſind in tiefstes Dunkel gehüllt. Wir wiſſen nur, daß es eben Menschen waren. Wir kennen nicht ihre Urſitze, Wanderungen und Ziele, nicht ihren Stammbaum und ihr Geblüt; wir wiſſen nicht, welche Sprachen ſie redeten, welche Gruppen ſie bildeten. Rein als Menschen müſſen wir ſie nehmen. Ihre Schädel- und Körper- formen ſind ja zum Teile bekannt; aber was können ſie uns ſagen? Es waren wohl weiße Menschen, aber nicht einmal das ist für alle ſicher. „Die ältesten Grundlagen der bäuerlichen Kultur in Europa ſind von der neolithischen Bevölkerung geschaffen worden, nicht wie die Fundamente eines großen Bauwerkes in einem Zuge. * Wenn auch als die Ureinwohner dieſer Gebiete Kelten angenommen werden, ſo ist die Heranziehung dieſer Daten trotzdem statthaft, weil Ur- kelten und Urgermanen den Anthropologen als identisch gelten.
