168 The admiration and astonishment with which the awakening of Germany, the world domination of England, and the successes of America have been viewed in recent decades were the capstone for the thesis of Germanic racial superiority.
It is correct that the bearers of the qualities that determine the present height of culture are in fact the Germanic peoples. The cardinal question arising from this is now why precisely the Germanic peoples are in possession of these qualities.* Germans to their world-historical destiny as the founders of a thoroughly new civilization and a thoroughly new culture forms the pivot of European history.

Already in the 13th century, nationalism had triumphed over imperialism. The flourishing of technology and industry, the founding of wholesale trade on the truly Germanic basis of impeccable honor, the rise of industrious cities, the discovery of the earth, the timidly beginning natural research, soon, however, extending its horizon over the entire cosmos, the journey into the deepest depths of human thought from Bacon to Kant, the spirit's striving towards heaven from Dante to Beethoven—in this Chamberlain recognizes the emergence of a new world.

168 Die Bewunderung und das Erstaunen, mit der in den letz- ten Jahrzehnten das Erwachen Deutschlands, die Weltherrschaft Englands und die Erfolge Amenkas betrachtet wurden, waren der Schlußstein für die Theſe von der germanischen Raſſen- ſupenontät. Richtig ist, daß die Träger der die gegenwärtige Kultur- höhe bedingenden Eigenschaften tatſächlich die Germanen ſind. Die daraus entstehende Kardinalfrage ist nun die, warum gerade die Germanen im Beſitze dieſer Eigenschaften ſind.* Germanen zu ihrer welthistonschen Bestimmung als Begründer einer durchaus neuen Zivilisation und einer durchaus neuen Kultur bildet den Angelpunkt der Geschichte Europas. Dieſer Umschwung beginnt um das Jahr 1200. Erfindung des Buch- druckes, der Kanonen, des Kompaſſes, später von Dampf, Elektnzität. 1215 Magna Charta. Im Verlauf des 13.
