159 it must seem that thousands of Jewish academics had to wither away because, as a result of their "racial inferiority," they could no longer find employment corresponding to their talents. All of this, even if, as in France, armies were disorganized and governments overthrown, are harmless trifles and games of world history. They disappear in comparison to the bloody catastrophes that the racial theory instigated when it crossed the border of semi-Asia. The eco- nomic significance of the Polish Jews still appeared very fruitful to the writers of the 1860s. When, ten years later, the ideas of the same writers were infected by racial antisemitism, they considered the same Jews to be the harmful elements of the Vistula region (Elkind). At the beginning of the 1880s, the first great bloody persecution of the Jews took place in Russia: under the influence of the ideas coming from Germany, the Jews were seen as the damaging elements of the Russian state, and several million were penned like defenseless sheep into the hurdle of the "Pale of Settlement," where they were bound to be crippled in body, mind, and character through hardship and systematic degradation. Ignatiev's Jewish legislation arose under the influence of ideas imported from its Germanic neighbors. And their power still endures, and the thousands of victims of the pogroms, and the emigration of a million capable workers from their former homeland are a continuing testimony to the power of Eugen Dühring.
And in the small neighboring country of Romania, it is the teachers, students, and university professors, that is, the intellectual leading circles, who, in the same Aryan arrogance with the ideas drawn from Marr and Dühring, initiated an agitation and still keep it alive, which has pushed the Jews back step by step from all sources of livelihood, deprived them of the means of education, and from time to time massacres them in devastating agrarian uprisings and drives them out of the country.* The national economic damage that this ideology has caused to the Jews amounts to hundreds of millions. 159 muß es erscheinen, daß Tauſende jüdische Akademiker verküm- mem mußten, weil ſie infolge ihrer „Raſſen-Infenontät“ nicht mehr eine ihrem Talente entsprechende Verwendung finden konnten. Das alles ſind, wenn auch, wie in Frankreich, Armeen deſorganiſiert, Regierungen gestürzt wurden, harmloſe Kleinig- keiten und Spielereien der Weltgeschichte. Sie verschwinden im Vergleich zu den blutigen Katastrophen, die die Raſſentheone annchtete, als ſie die Grenze Halbasiens überschntt. Die ökono- mische Bedeutung der polnischen Juden erschien noch den Schnftstellem der Sechzigerjahre als ſehr fruchtbar. Als zehn Jahre später die Ideen derſelben Schnftsteller vom Raſſenanti- ſemitismus infiziert waren, hielten ſie die gleichen Juden für die schädlichen Elemente des Weichſelgebietes (Elkind). Zu Beginn der Achtzigerjahre fand in Rußland die erste große blutige Judenverfolgung statt: unter dem Einfluſſe der aus Deutschland gekommenen Ideen erblickte man in den Juden die schädigenden Elemente des ruſſischen Staates und sperrte einige Millionen wie wehrloſe Hammel in die Hürde des „An- ſiedlungsrayons“, wo ſie durch Not und ſystematische Ent- ehrung zu Krüppeln werden müſſen an Körper, Geist und Charakter. Die Judengeſetzgebung Ignatiews entstand unter dem Einfluß der von den germanischen Nachbam importierten Ideen. Und noch immer dauert deren Macht und die Tauſende Opfer der Pogroms, und die Auswanderung einer Million tüch- tiger Arbeitskräfte aus ihrer bishengen Heimat ſind ein fort- wirkendes Zeugnis der Macht Eugen Dühnngs. Und in dem kleinen Nachbarlande Rumänien ſind es die Lehrer, Studenten und Univerſitätsprofessoren, alſo die geistig führenden Kreiſſe, die im gleichen Aner-Dünkel mit den von Marr und Dühnng bezogenen Ideen eine Agitation ins Leben nefen und ſie noch wachhalten, die die Juden Etappe für Etappe von allen Erwerbsquellen zurückdrängte, ihnen die Bil- dungsmittel entzog und von Zeit zu Zeit in verheerenden Agrar- aufständen ſie maſſaknert und aus dem Lande treibt.* Der volks- wirtschaftliche Schaden, den dieſe Ideologie an den Juden ver- urſacht hat, beziffert ſich auf Hunderte von Millionen.
