154 standard that the genuine Jew, whether strictly orthodox or a freethinker, could apply to all cultural values. — Yet within this limited conception, prophecy nevertheless accomplished tremendous, admirable things; the high conception of morality is its work. Yet even this relatively great achievement within Hebrew culture did not have its origin in the kingdom of Judah, but rather in Israel, which already had a milder racial composition than southern Judah. The latter was only the heir of the Ephraimite culture. The truly unique work of the Judeans, insofar as they as a race are identical with the Jews living today, was their culture since the Babylonian exile, or rather their nomocracy inaugurated with the alleged discovery of Deuteronomy. This genuine Judaism with its limited point of view and its spiritual barrenness, which nevertheless, in the delusion of its chosenness with its business cunning, makes itself at home everywhere, is that against which the Aryan peoples still wage a futile battle today. A kind of religious genius has been ascribed to the Jews, they have been presented as the creators of all the religions of the new civilized world. They have been credited with a religious classicism and the intellectual division of labor among the nations tailored accordingly: just as the Greeks classically founded philosophy and the Romans law, so the Jews classically founded religion. So a special aptitude for religion was ascribed to the Jews, but this fable has now been finally destroyed. Quite the contrary, it is precisely the Jews who are the least religiously gifted of all the peoples of the earth. Even the Negroes and Australians sometimes surpass them in this. Whatever religious ideas are found are without exception borrowed from foreign peoples and at the same time incomprehensibly reduced to a minimum. Above all, for the Jews religion is not an inner, but rather an outer experience; they do not believe in the all-pervading Divine that lives within us, but they believe in a powerful idol, because their fathers claim that he once spoke to them from Mount Sinai and performed all sorts of wondrous feats. Man habe den Juden eine Art von religiösem Genie zuge- schneben, man hat sie als Schöpfer der gesamten Religionen der neuen Kulturwelt hingestellt. Man hat ihnen eine religiöse Klassizität beigelegt und sich die geistige Arbeitsteilung unter den Nationen danach zugeschnitten: wie die Gnechen die Phi- losophie und die Römer das Recht, so hätten die Juden die Religion klassisch begründet. Man schneb also den Juden eine besondere Befähigung für Religion zu, aber diese Fabel sei jetzt endgültig vemichtet. Ganz im Gegenteil sind gerade die Juden religiös am wenigsten begabt von allen Völkem der Erde. Selbst die Neger und Australier überragen sie hienn zuweilen. Was an religiösen Vorstellungen sich finde, sei ausnahmslos fremden Völkem entlehnt und dabei verständnislos auf ein Minimum reduziert. Vor allem ist den Juden Religion keine innere, sondem eine äußere Erfahrung; sie glauben nicht an das in uns lebende, alles durchdnngende Göttliche, sondem sie glauben an einen mächtigen Götzen, weil ihre Väter behaupten, er habe einmal vom Sinai herunter zu ihnen gesprochen und allerlei wundersame Kunststücke vollbracht.
