A walk in the streets of Cairo, where we see the people living today, and in the museums of Cairo, where we can study the features of the ancient Egyptians, teaches us that not only are the physiognomy and the build of the ancient and the modern Egyptians the same, but that their physiognomy also differs little from that of the Arabs, and that a very large fraction of the Jews — admittedly only a fraction, not all, and here we differ again from Stratz — possesses the same type.
A second component, namely, for the complexion of the Jewish race is represented by the Near Eastern peoples:
The view that the Jews are related to the other Southwest Asian peoples is supported by the uniform character of the Phoenicians, Babylonians, Assyrians with the Jews — a uniformity that manifests itself not just in language, sagas, buildings, and in their original religious forms down to small details, but mainly in their depictions, often to the point of identity. The depictions of Assyrians and Babylonians that have been preserved for us show not only a great correspondence with the depictions of ancients, but also a surprising similarity to the type of today's Jews. Judt brings in his book a series of illustrations that attest to the identity of the Jewish type with that of the Caucasians, Kurds, Iranians, etc.*

Ein Spaziergang in den Straßen von Kairo, in denen wir die heute lebenden Menschen sehen, und in den Museen von Kairo, wo wir die Züge der antiken Ägypter studieren können, lehrt uns, daß nicht nur die Phyſiognomie und der Gliederbau der antiken und der modemen Ägypter die gleichen sind, son- dem daß ihre Phyſiognomie ſich auch von der der Araber wenig unterscheidet, und daß ein ſehr großer Bruchteil der Juden — allerdings nur ein Bruchteil, nicht alle, und hier unterscheiden wir uns wieder von Stratz — den gleichen Typus beſitzt. Eine zweite Komponente nämlich für die Komplexion der jüdischen Raſſe stellen die vorderasiatischen Völker dar: Für die Anſicht, daß die Juden mit den übngen ſüdwest- aſiatischen Völkerschaften verwandt ſind, spncht schon der einheitliche Charakter der Phönizier, Babylonier, Aſſyrer mit den Juden — eine Einheitlichkeit, die ſich eben nicht bloß in Sprache, Sagen, Bauwerken und in ihren ursprünglichen reli- giöſen Formen bis in kleine Einzelheiten hinein, ſondem haupt- ſächlich in ihren Abbildungen vielfach bis zur Identität kund- gibt. Die Abbildungen von Aſſyrem und Babyloniem, die uns erhalten ſind, zeigen nicht nur eine große Übereinstimmung mit den Abbildungen von Antiken, ſondem auch eine über- raschende Ähnlichkeit mit dem Typus der heutigen Juden. Judt bnngt in ſeinem Buche eine Reihe von Illustrationen, die die Identität des jüdischen Typus mit dem der Kaukaſier, Kurden, Iranier usw. bekunden.* * Wir hatten bei früherer Gelegenheit erwähnt, daß die modifizirende Wirkung des geänderten Milieus bereits bei der städtischen Bevölkerung und noch mehr beim Adel in einer Verfeinerung des Typus und in einer allgemeinen Abblaſſung ſich geltend mache, daß aber infolge kontinu- irlicher Vermischung mit der Landbevölkerung ſich dieſe Erscheinung nur beim Adel längere Zeiträume hindurch als für die Dauer einiger Generatio- nen verfolgen laſſe, daß das einzige Exempel, wo eine Stadtbevölkerung ſich Jahrtausende hindurch ungemischt erhalten hat, die Juden ſeien.
