134 Every good anthropological atlas is further documentary proof of this identity. One can say that the prototype for almost all Jewish physiognomies can be found either in Egypt or in Syria and Persia. Palestine, after all, lies right on the borderline between the two large groups, and their interbreeding in this place, common to both areas, would be natural and probable, even if we did not have precise historical knowledge of it from the mythical age and from the time of the Judges. However, we also know from historical sources that the type, as it existed then, has remained fixed since the first exile through inbreeding and has only received a special secondary stamp from the social and psychological fates of the people. It is a widespread error to assume the caricature type of the Jew as the dominant one; in nature, it is found just as rarely as the lieutenant or the professor of the caricature. That the physiognomy has its own characteristics, however, is most easily recognized where the social type is not artificially blurred. Among poor Jews in all countries, one recognizes at first glance the similarity, which, to be sure, deviates far from the traditional Jewish type of the joke papers. To a superficial judgment, the most important characteristic of the Jewish face appears to be the peculiar, large, curved nose, whose bend, however, is not like that of the are built than the peoples just discussed, with whom they otherwise correspond. We must not forget that two millennia of a separate development, moreover under completely different geographical conditions, lie in between. And even if it should turn out that, within insignificant limits of fluctuation, fewer blonds are found among the Jews themselves in countries with dark populations, and more in countries with light populations, then, besides the effect of the climate, which makes itself gently felt even within a series of centuries, sexual selection may also be at play. And we would have to imagine its effectiveness in such a way that, under the influence of the ideal of beauty of the blond population, the blond elements also unconsciously enjoy a certain preference in Jewish marriages.

134 Jeder gute anthropologische Atlas ist ein weiteres Beweis- dokument für dieſe Identität. Man kann ſagen, daß man den *Prototypus* fast für alle jüdischen Phyſiognomien entweder in Ägypten oder in Synen und Perſien auffinden kann. Palästina liegt ja gerade auf der Grenzlinie zwischen den beiden großen Gruppen und deren Kreuzung an dieſem, beiden Gebieten gemeinschaftlichen Platze wäre naheliegend und wahrscheinlich, auch wenn wir davon nicht aus der Sagenzeit und aus der Zeit der Richter genaue histonsche Kunde hätten. Allerdings wiſſen wir ebenfalls aus histonschen Quellen, daß der Typus ſeit dem ersten Exil, ſo wie er damals bestand, durch Inzucht fixirt blieb und nur durch die ſozialen und ſeelischen Schickſale des Volkes noch eine beſondere ſekundäre Prägung erhielt. Es ist ein verbreiteter Irrthum, den Kankaturtypus des Juden als den herrschenden anzunehmen; in der Natur findet er ſich ebenſo ſelten wie der Leutnant oder der Profeſſor der Kankatur. Daß aber die Phyſiognomie ihre eigenen Charaktere hat, erkennt man am ehesten, wo der ſoziale Typus nicht künstlich verwischt ist. Bei den armen Juden erkennt man in allen Län- dem auf den ersten Blick die Ähnlichkeit, die allerdings von dem traditionellen Judentypus der Witzblätter weit abweicht. Dem oberflächlichen Urteil erscheint als das wichtigste Charaktenstikum des jüdischen Geſichtes die eigentümliche, große, gebogene Naſe, deren Umbiegung aber nicht wie bei der bau ſind als die eben besprochenen Völker, mit denen ſie ſonst überein- stimmen. Wir dürfen eben nicht vergeſſen, daß zwei Jahrtausende einer geſonderten Entwicklung, noch dazu unter ganz anderen geographischen Verhältniſſen, dazwischen liegen. Und ſelbst wenn es ſich herausstellen ſollte, daß innerhalb unbedeuten- der Schwankungsgrenzen in den Ländem mit dunkler Bevölkerung weniger, in Ländem mit heller Bevölkerung mehr Blonde unter den Juden ſelbst ſich finden, ſo dürfte da neben der auch innerhalb einer Reihe von Jahr- hunderten schon leiſe fühlbar machenden *Wirkung des Klimas* auch die geschlechtliche Zuchtwahl mit wirkſam ſein. Und zwar hätten wir uns deren Wirkſamkeit ſo vorzustellen, daß unter dem Einfluß des Schönheits- ideals der blonden Bevölkerung auch in jüdischen Ehen unbewußt die blon- den Elemente eine gewiſſe Bevorzugung genießen.
