All racial classifications according to skull and hair form are therefore useless, for the one reason alone that all forms are found side by side in Europeans as well as in Australians. Trichology, despite having accumulated very valuable material from careful individual studies, has so far failed, just as much as anthropometry and craniology, to create a firm foundation for anthropological research.

Since the Aryan theory was too broad for the race theorists, and it also began to falter due to the incongruity of the linguistic with the anthropological facts, they sought to replace it with the Germanic theory; the hypothesis was advanced that the proto-Aryans had actually been blond northerners. This opinion was first expressed by Moritz Wagner, then developed by Lapouge, Wilser, Penka, and Woltmann into the system that not only in the supposedly Aryan lands, but everywhere, any cultural progress was first initiated by the creative genius of the Germanic peoples. If all cultural and material progress were to be attributed to the Germanic peoples, then their physical presence at all points on earth would have to be presupposed, at least for those times. For the Middle Ages and modern times, this was not difficult in Europe because of the Germanic migrations. For classical, Greek and Roman antiquity, the Dorian migration was tinkered with for so long until it became a Thessalian, then an Illyrian, then a Germanic migration originating from even further north. Alle Rasseneinteilungen nach Schädel- und Haarform sind also unbrauchbar, schon aus dem einen Grunde, weil sich sämtliche Formen sowohl bei Europäem als auch bei Australiem nebeneinander vorfinden. Der Tnchologie ist es, trotzdem da- mit ein sehr wertvolles Matenal von sorgfältigen Einzelunter- ſuchungen angehäuft wurde, bisher ebensowenig wie der An- thropometne und der Kraniologie gelungen, eine feste Grund- lage für die anthropologische Forschung zu schaffen. * * * Da den Raſſentheoretikem die Anertheone zu weit war, und dieſe auch wegen der Inkongruenz des linguistischen mit dem anthropologischen Tatbestande ins Wanken genet, ſuchte man ſie durch die Germanentheone zu erſetzen, man stellte die Hypotheſe auf, die Uraner ſeien eigentlich blonde Nordländer geweſen. Dieſe Meinung wurde zuerst von Montz Wagner ausgesprochen, dann von Lapouge, Wilſer, Penka und Wolt- mann zu dem System ausgebaut, daß nicht nur in den angeb- lich anschen Ländem, ſondem überall jedweder Kulturfort- schntt erst durch das schöpfensche Genie der Germanen ini- tiiert worden ſei. Wenn aller kultureller und mateneller Fortschntt auf die Germanen zurückzuführen ſein ſollte, mußte auch für die da- maligen Zeiten zumindest ihre leibliche Anweſenheit an allen Punkten der Erde vorausgeſetzt werden können. Für Mittelalter und Neuzeit war dies in Europa wegen der germanischen Völkerwanderung unschwer. Für das klas- ſische, gnechische und römische Altertum künstelte man an der donschen Wanderung ſo lange herum, bis aus derſelben eine theſſalische, dann illynsche, dann eine aus noch höherem Nor- den stammende germanische Wanderung wurde.
