The Bushmen and the Hottentots belong to one and the same race, yet the former are smaller because they inhabit the barren Kalahari desert. Ranke has established the same phenomenon with regard to the fertile regions of Bavaria in comparison to the barren ones. Zakrzewsky in Warsaw has compiled numerical tables for the individual city districts, from which a higher figure resulted for the richer districts than for those densely inhabited by the poor. The same has been demonstrated by Matiegka for Prague. * It goes without saying that the causes of stronger or weaker growth are conditioned by the same factors that bring about both physical prosperity and physical degeneration. Even the authors who believe that height is a typical, constant racial index admit the fact that the milieu can cause a delay in development or its complete halt. If we turn to the Jews, it is easy to demonstrate that they too succumb to the generally recognized influence of the milieu. It even seems that the Jews, scattered over a colossal geographical terrain and dependent on the most diverse environments, are the most favorable material for observation in this respect. –
- Beddoe found the average body height for persons working outdoors to be 171.5 cm, but for those employed in enclosed spaces only 169.5, thus a difference of 2 cm. Roberts, Cowell, Olontz, and others reached similar results. Olontz found the population of densely populated city districts to be 49 mm shorter than in healthier districts. It was found that in the poorer parts of Prague the growth of schoolchildren remained below average, but improved in a flourishing district within just a few years. It has been shown that over time the average body height of entire regions can increase through improvement of living conditions. When, during a honeymoon trip of Queen Victoria, the Scottish noblemen wanted to give her a national festival and, to make the matter more authentic, wanted to use the old suits of armor kept in the castles, it was found to the greatest surprise that these noblemen had become much taller and stronger than their ancestors.

74 Das Verhältniß in der Größe der Anstokratie Londons und der Arbeiterklaſſe ist nach Deniker 177⋅5 zu 170⋅5 cm. Die Buschmänner und die Hottentotten gehören einer und derſelben Raſſe an, doch ſind die ersteren kleiner, weil ſie die unfruchtbare Wüste Kalahan bewohnen. Ranke hat dieſelbe Erscheinung hinſichtlich der fruchtbaren Gegenden Bayems im Vergleiche zu den dürftigen festgestellt. Zakrzewsky in Warschau hat Ziffemtabellen für die ein- zelnen Stadtviertel zuſammengestellt, woraus ſich für die rei- cheren Stadtviertel eine höhere Ziffer ergab als für die von Armen dicht bewohnten. Das gleiche hat Matiegka für Prag nachgewieſen. * Selbstverständlich ſind die Urſachen des stärkeren oder schwächeren Wachstums durch dieſelben Faktoren bedingt, welche sowohl phyſisches Gedeihen als körperliche Degeneration herbeiführen. Auch die Autoren, nach deren Meinung die Größe ein typischer, ständiger Raſſenindex ist, geben die Tat- ſache zu, daß das Milieu eine Verzögerung in der Entwickelung oder ihre gänzliche Aufhaltung hervorrufen kann. Wenden wir uns den Juden zu, ſo ist es leicht nachzuweiſen, daß auch ſie dem allgemein anerkannten Einfluſſe des Milieus mit erliegen. Es scheint sogar, daß die auf einem koloſſalen geographischen Terrain zerstreuten und von der mannigfaltig- sten Umgebung abhängigen Juden in dieſer Beziehung das gün- stigste Beobachtungsmatenal ſind. – * Beddoe fand als durchschnittliche Körpergröße bei im Freien arbei- tenden Perſonen 171⋅5 cm, aber bei den in geschloſſenen Räumen Beschäf- tigten nur 169⋅5, alſo einen Unterschied von 2 cm. Zu ähnlichen Reſul- taten gelangten Roberts, Cowell, Olontz u. a. Olontz fand die Bevölkerung dichtbevölkerter Stadtteile um 49 mm kleiner als in geſünderen Stadt- vierteln. Es wurde gefunden, daß in den ärmeren Stadtteilen Prags der Wuchs der Schulkinder unter dem Mittel blieb, aber in einem aufblühenden Stadtteile schon in einigen Jahren ſich beſſerte. Es wurde gezeigt, daß im Laufe der Zeit die durchschnittliche Körpergröße ganzer Landstnche durch Verbeſſerung der Existenzbedingungen zunehmen kann. Als bei einer Hochzeitsreiſe der Königin Viktona die schottischen Edelleute ihr ein nationales Fest geben und, um die Sache echter zu ge- stalten, die in den Schlöſſem verwahrten alten Rüstungen verwenden wollten, fand man zur größten Überraschung, daß dieſe Edelleute viel größer und stärker geworden waren als ihre Vorfahren.
