Woltmann investigated the physical type and the ancestry of Italians and Frenchmen who distinguished themselves as artists, hu- manists, natural scientists, philosophers, poets, and musicians, and found that the majority of them were to be assigned entirely or predominantly to the Germanic race. But the method is quite peculiar, how he claims more or less famous Italians, who had only blue eyes or others who had only blond hair, for the Germanic element. With the same justification, one could consider the former, because of their black hair, and the latter, because of their brown eyes, as belonging to the Mediterranean race. Even more uncertain is the connection of psychic characteristics with race or with specific racial traits. If someone has inherited only the eye color from the external characteristics of the blond race, why should he then owe all psychic characteristics to precisely this race, as Napoleon, precisely because of his blue eyes, is also supposed to have his genius from the Vandals? To name a few dozen names is not enough to say all men of importance were of Germanic descent. This school of thought generally attributes far too much weight to the hitherto most meager results of race research and, in its valuation of the Northern European race, adopts a thoroughly partisan standpoint (v. Neupauer). Since we have furthermore designated this section exclusively for the treatment of anthropological data material, we must reserve the critique of those theories that relate more to historico-philosophical themes and to the problem of heredity for the later parts of this book. In this section, we want to subject only the exact anthropolo- gical material to an analysis. Woltmann hat den körperlichen Typus und die Abstamm- mung von Italienem und Franzosen, die sich als Künstler, Hu- manisten, Naturforscher, Philosophen, Dichter und Musiker hervorragend betätigt haben, untersucht und gefunden, daß die Mehrzahl derselben ganz oder vorwiegend der germanischen Rasse zuzurechnen sei. Es ist aber die Methode ganz eigentüm- lich, wie er mehr oder weniger berühmte Italiener, die nur blaue Augen oder andere, die nur blondes Kopfhaar hatten, für das germanische Element in Anspruch nimmt. Mit demselben Recht könnte man erstere wegen ihrer schwarzen Haare und letztere wegen ihrer braunen Augen für Angehönge der mittelländischen Rasse halten. Gar unsicher ist erst der Zusammenhang der psychischen Eigenschaften mit der Rasse oder mit bestimmten Rassenmerk- malen. Wenn jemand von den äußeren Merkmalen der blonden Rasse nur die Augenfarbe geerbt hat, warum soll er dann alle psychischen Eigenschaften gerade dieser Rasse verdanken, wie Napoleon gerade durch die blauen Augen auch das Genie von den Vandalen haben soll? Einige Dutzend Namen nennen ist nicht genug, um zu sagen, alle Männer von Bedeutung waren germanischer Abkunft. Diese Schule legt überhaupt den bishengen, höchst dürftigen Ergebnissen der Rassenforschung ein viel zu großes Gewicht bei und nimmt in der Wertung der nordeuropäischen Rasse einen durchaus parteiischen Standpunkt ein (v.
