praiseworthy deeds have only the value of an experiment in a test tube. It is clear that only entirely different paths can lead to a solution, that a movement is needed which originates from the entire people, and addresses itself to the entire people. Zionism, which encompasses Jews from all countries and continents and wants to settle a large part of the Jewish people in Palestine and lead them to primary production, lays claim to becoming such a movement. Its goal is: The formation of a coherent Jewish population in Palestine with agriculture as its economic basis and Hebrew as its national language under the sovereignty of Turkey, which secures foreign protection, the stability of development, and a vigorous economic expansion. And in fact, the proud ideas of Theodor Herzl have won over by storm hundreds of thousands of Jews for the Jewish national idea, who were well on their way to succumbing to assimilation, and both liberal and orthodox elements united with equal devotion to create a great organization encompassing the Jews of the entire world. Zionism alone can free the Jews from their millennia- long exile; only this idea offers the Jewish people not only a refuge, but gives it what must bring it new life again: its own, free soil, in which it can strike the roots of its strength; indigenous, calm possibilities for development, so that it can clarify what millennia of persecution has burdened it with in terms of painful experience; free creativity, so that in competition with all other peoples it may give the best of what a fateful past has stored within it in potential achievements since the most ancient cultural times. From whatever side we view the fate of this people, from whatever perspective we logically think through the material with the help of the present book, it always emerges for us as the only possible 57.

rühmenswerten Taten nur den Wert eines Verſuchs in der Retorte. Es ist klar, daß da nur ganz andere Wege zur Löſung führen können, daß es da einer Bewegung bedarf, die vom ganzen Volk ausgeht, und an das ganze Volk ſich wendet. Der Zionismus, der Juden aller Länder und Erdteile umfaßt und einen großen Teil des Judenvolkes in Palästina anſiedeln und der Urproduktion zuführen will, erhebt An- spruch darauf, eine ſolche Bewegung zu werden. Sein Ziel ist: Die Bildung einer kohärenten jüdischen Bevölkerung in Palästina mit der Landwirtschaft als ökonomischer Grund- lage und dem Hebräischen als nationaler Sprache unter der den auswärtigen Schutz, die Stabilität der Entwicklung und eine kräftige ökonomische Entfaltung ſichemden Souveräni- tät der Türkei. Und tatſächlich haben die stolzen Ideen Theodor Herzl’s viele Hunderttauſende von Juden, die auf dem besten Wege waren, der Assimilation zu verfallen, für die jüdische Nationalidee im Sturme gewonnen, und freisinige sowie orthodoxe Elemente vereinten ſich mit gleicher Hin- gabe zur Schaffung einer großen, die Juden der ganzen Welt umfassenden Organisation. Der Zionismus allein kann die Juden aus dem jahr- tauſendelangen Exil befreien; nur dieſe Idee bietet dem jüdischen Volke nicht nur eine Zufluchtsstätte, ſondem gibt ihm, was ihm wieder neues Leben bnngen muss: eige- nen, freien Boden, in den es die Wurzeln ſeiner Kraft schlagen kann; bodenständige, ruhige Ent- wicklungs-Möglichkeiten, damit es zur Klärung bnnge, was jahrtausendelange Verfolgung an schmerzlicher Erfahrung ihm aufgebürdet; freies Schaffen, daß es im Wettstreit mit allen anderen Völkem das Beste gebe, was von der ältesten Kulturzeit an eine schickſalsreiche Vergan- genheit an Leistungsmöglichkeiten in ihm aufgespeichert hat. Von welcher Seite immer wir das Schickſal dieſes Volkes betrachten, aus welcher Perspektive immer wir an der Hand des vorliegendes Buches die Matene logisch durchdenken, stets ergibt es sich für uns als einzig mögliche 57.
