task in the sense of the high cultural goals of the Jewish people's welfare: to apply all available strength to the reali- zation of Zionist ideas and to promote the development that is already taking place today in Palestine, where the number of flourishing Jewish farming villages is continually increasing and the Hebrew language has been awakened to new life, with a completely different inten- sity than has been the case so far with the limited dissemination of Zionist knowledge. All these lines of thought — previously recognized purely on an emotional basis — have gained a real foundation through Zollschan's investigations into the value of the Jewish race; what we previously, guided by a longing for freedom and love for our people, instinctively recognized as right and desira- ble, has been established by him scientifically as truth; a new epoch of Zionism will follow this book. And that is why we see in Zollschan's book the most valu- able contribution to the understanding of one of the most striking individ- ualities among the peoples. But in this understanding lies the first step toward the rebirth of Judaism. 58
