Jewish peddlers strives to have his sons educated — but the consequence of this is only an army of intellectual proletarians.
And yet, a brilliant counterpart to the previously sketched creative cultural achievements is also the activity which the Jews have displayed in the founding of modern economic life in Europe and America. It is not only highly interesting, but also of importance for the prognosis of the socio-economic future of Judaism, to trace the long and multi-phased development which has led to the current position of the Jews in the economic life of Europe, and to develop the laws that, viewed historically, govern the economic life of the Jewish people. Even in antiquity, the economic activity of the Jews went through manifold phases. In Palestine they were farmers, in Babylonia agriculturalists and merchants, in the cities of Asia Minor and Egypt craftsmen. But even in the present time, the Jews, depending on how external circumstances compel them, hold all types of professions. In Western Europe, they belong predominantly to the merchant class and the free professions. In the East, Russia and Romania, they are also craftsmen and factory workers, in Odessa porters, in Thessaloniki boatmen and dockworkers. It is well known that the diamond cutters of Amsterdam are all recruited from the ghetto. In the Governorate of Kherson, in Canada, Argentina, and Palestine, they have for decades once again become capable farmers. In view of this enumeration, which encompasses all types of professions, we recognize how false it is to ascribe to the Jews a specific commercial spirit and peddler's sense. However, they did indeed first earn their great merits for the economic development of Europe as peddlers and traders. Already in the late Roman imperial period, it was the Jewish traders who connected East and West, North and South. 49
