For stepping out of the compulsion of the ghetto is for the modern Jew almost always synonymous with abandoning ceremonial law, and what then remains is a pure ideology that drives him straight into the arms of freethinking, of irreligiousness. Even though this de-Judaization process proceeds only gradually, from individual to individual, from family to family, it is nevertheless so tremendously significant due to the fundamental, natural necessity that lies within it. It is ultimately i n e v i t a b l e that the large ghetto complexes, that is, the Jewish masses of the East, will be more and more civilized from the periphery, while at the same time from within them, a constant, centrifugal outflow of precisely the most energetic elements into civilization occurs. It is only a matter of time until this process, accelerated moreover by the progressive impoverishment of the part remaining in the ghetto, will be completed. In any case, it is just now beginning to become extraordinarily acute. It is truly a dissolution process of Judaism that we are now witnessing. Besides baptism, mixed marriage also brings about a reduction in the size of the Jewish population. Both initiate the same process of the disappearance of Jewish blood into the surrounding, far more numerous, racially foreign population. Civil law today permits mixed marriage everywhere, and religion is beginning to lose its authority. Sexuality or material interests are more powerful than any confessional barrier, especially when this itself exists only as a mere memory. The best ground for mixed marriage is found in those countries where Jews have been settled for a long time and have achieved prosperity. This is particularly the case in the Western countries. It is a great, constantly flowing stream, fed from the great basin of Orthodox Judaism in Eastern Europe and pouring into the sea of Christianity. The infiltration of Judaism with modern culture 46

Denn das Herausstreten aus dem Zwang des Ghettos ist für den modemen Juden fast immer gleichbedeutend mit dem Aufgeben des Zeremoniells, und was dann noch bleibt, ist eine reine Ideologie, die ihn dem Freiſgeistthum, der Ir- religioſität geradezu in die Arme treibt. Wenn auch dieſer Entjudungsprozeß nur allmählich, von Individuum zu Individuum, von Familie zu Familie fort- schreitend, vor ſich geht, ſo ist er doch ſo ungeheuer be- deutungsvoll durch das Pnnzipielle, Natumotwendige, das in ihm liegt. Es ist schließlich u n a u s w e i c h l i ch , daß die großen Ghettokomplexe, das ſind die Judenmaſſen des Ostens, von der Penphene her immer mehr und mehr zi- viliſiert werden, während gleichzeitig aus ihrem Innem her- aus ein immerwährendes, zentnfugales Abströmen gerade der tatkräftigsten Elemente in die Ziviliſation erfolgt. Es ist nur eine Zeitfrage, wann dieſer Prozeß, noch dazu beschleunigt durch die fortschreitende Verelendung des im Ghetto verbleibenden Teiles, beendet ſein wird. Jedenfalls beginnt er gerade in der Gegenwart auſſer- ordentlich akut zu werden. Es ist geradezu ein Auf- löſungsprozeß des Judentums, den wir jetzt mit- erleben. Auſſer der Taufe führt auch noch die Misch- ehe eine Verminderung des Bestandes der jüdischen Be- völkerung herbei. Beide leiten denſelben Prozeß des Ver- schwindens jüdischen Blutes in der umgebenden, an Zahl weit überlegenen, raſſenfremden Bevölkerung ein. Das zivile Geſetz gestattet heute überall die Mischehe, und die Religion fängt an, ihre Maßgeblichkeit zu verlieren. Die Sexualität oder die matenellen Intereſſen ſind mächtiger als jede konfeſſionelle Schranke, namentlich wenn dieſe ſelbst nur mehr als bloſſe Ennnerung besteht. Den besten Boden für die Mischehe bilden diejenigen Länder, in denen die Juden ſeit längerer Zeit anſäſſig und zu Wohlstand gelangt ſind. Das ist namentlich in den West- ländem der Fall. Es ist ein großer, ständig flieſſender Strom, der aus dem großen Becken des orthodoxen Judentums im östlichen Europa gespeist wird und ſich in das Meer des Chnstentums ergießt.
