deepens and expands, and thus transforms into conscious abilities.
The brain of a newborn is thus not a blank slate, but contains, albeit only in blurred impressions, the traces of all the mental experiences and abilities of its ancestors. In the course of life, these inherited, instinctive impressions are, where appropriate, re-chiseled and attain clarity and depth through practice.
The sum of all unconscious experiences (engrams) that a person inherits, Semon calls the M n e m e. It is the mental material, the t a l e n t of the individual, stored up in the subconscious as instincts. It is the potential energy of the brain, which is converted according to requirement and inclination into kinetic, living brain energy, into conscious intellect.
Only in this way can it be explained why the descendants of highly developed races possess such a rich fund of instincts, i.e., of unconscious experiences inherited from their ancestors, which are relatively easily awakened and transformed into personal, conscious mental property. And from this we also learn to understand the fact of the diversity of talents: The Mneme of each individual depends, of course, on the past of his ancestors, his race; and therefore the descendant of an old civilized people has at his disposal an infinitely richer fund of instincts than that of a race that has been unproductive since primeval times.
If we now set about determining the value of the talents of the Jewish race, we can measure it by the past of this people, which already in primeval times experienced brilliant periods of spiritual and material culture and for whom, up to the present day, the training of the mind was considered the foremost religious duty. Only thus can we appreciate the immense material of instinct that resides in the members of this race and has made them the most versatile and mentally agile people of our time. But this is also a guarantee of the enormous developmental capacity of the
