This is a topic that has greatly interested research for more than a hundred years. Formerly a subject of purely philosophical discussion, it has now become an area of experimental research, which alone can bring us exact results.
Until very recently, two schools of thought stood opposed to one another: Lamarck's standpoint of the interaction of adaptation and inheritance of properties acquired through adaptation; thus, the doctrine of the mutability and potential for further development of the species. — The other is the more recent, but strangely enough more reverting to the standpoint of creation theory, doctrine of Weismann of the equality of species characters persisting through all time.
In the most recent times, two important decisions have been reached in this matter. Firstly, the fact that experimental research has succeeded in proving that even peculiarities acquired in a relatively short time, e.g. rather drastic changes in the mode of reproduction, are inherited.
And indeed, these observations can be made equally in the animal kingdom as in the plant kingdom.
The second important achievement in the field of the theory of heredity is Semon's theory of the Mneme, which, however, we can only report on cursorily here.
Semon proceeds from Lamarck's standpoint that everything that nature allows the individual to acquire or lose, can be transmitted through heredity.
According to Semon's theory, this law applies not only to physical characteristics but—this part of his theory has been further developed in an excellent manner by Zollschan —equally also to mental impressions.
The mental acquisitions that the ancestral line of an individual has made are, to be sure, inherited only in the form of predispositions, of dispositions, which the individual only in the course of his life, according to inclination and need,

In allerjüngster Zeit ſind nun in dieſer Sache zwei wichtige Entscheidungen gefallen.
