sive calculation of numerous indices was not able to demarcate a specific human group from others. It turns out that on the entire earth there is not a single race, no matter how small, that would have exhibited an absolutely uniform type. All races showed the most diverse types and mixtures of these types, and one could be happy if it was possible to present any one type as considerably predominant. And when one descended into the graves of prehistoric times, one found the same result. Even the oldest races known to us appear mixed. Doubts even had to arise about the usability of the cranial index in general, when it was found that, for example, the Indians, who possess a particularly striking uniformity of external type, at the same time exhibit the most diverse skull shapes in irregular distribution. The ancient Germanic peoples also appeared to Tacitus as a pure, unmixed race. Nevertheless, anthropology shows us that they were already composed of several types. Ranke alone has, among the population of Upper Bavaria, demonstrated the existence of all racial skulls side by side. One day a mass grave was discovered in a Parisian cemetery, about which the rumor immediately arose that it contained the bones of the soldiers from the army of the Allies who fell in Paris in 1813. A famous craniologist examined the skulls and identified one as Finnish, others as Bashkir, Kalmyk, etc. In the Russian army, all these peoples were indeed represented. Unfortunately, it was soon established that only women, good Parisian women, were buried at the site, who had died of cholera in 1832 (Hertz). The following sheds a strange light on the origin of many cranial indices: Walcher, in the "Zentralblatt für Gynäkologie," published communications about investigations he had conducted regarding the development of long- or short-headedness in several hundred infants through consistent positioning either on their back or on their side. Among other things, he was able, on two same-sex 17
