and dark brown elements, light brown and blond individuals are not infrequently found. Now, pigment is known as an essential means of protection against the harmful effects of excessive exposure to light. So as superfluous as strong pigmentation becomes in the cold North, it is beneficial in the tropics. It is therefore easy to see that in colder regions, natural selection was directed toward favoring the elements with little pigment, and that conversely, in the lands under the equator, the tendency of selective breeding directed toward increasing pigment prevailed. Nothing compels us, therefore, to see in lighter pigmentation the monopoly of one race and to explain the occasional occurrence of blond elements only by the admixture of Germanic blood. ————— We now come to the most important argument of the anthropologists, cranial measurement. Proceeding from the idea that the human skull, as the carrier of the brain, is the most characteristic feature of his body, one felt compelled to determine its shape in its most diverse manifestations with the greatest possible precision. There are—depending on the ratio of the length to the width diameter (called the cranial index)—long skulls, short skulls, and mixed forms of both. When it was once possible to sharply separate Swedes and Lapps using the cranial index, it was believed that this result could also be achieved with all other races. A true index enthusiasm seized the anthropological world; in the process, a summary evaluation was usually tied to the occurrence of individual types. Long-heads were presented as the noble type, while the short-heads were said to have come up short in their mental and moral abilities as well. With the accumulation of cranial measurements, however, it became more and more apparent that even the most careful and exten- 16
