which, feeling its own national consciousness dwindle more and more, was now bound to the motherland only by religious ties, it contributed to weakening the sharpness and severity of this same consciousness in the pagan world as well, into whose structure it was interspersed. For before their astonished eyes, a spectacle never before witnessed was revealed: that people who had ceased to be a nation were united by higher bonds than territorial and national ones into a single community of faith, despite their distribution across the most diverse territories and indeed despite linguistic and other differences. This strange, unique phenomenon could not fail to make an impression on the ancient peoples and must have prompted them to reflect on the frailty of state structures built merely on national foundations. “In the ancient world too” — says Mommsen*) — “Judaism was an effective ferment of cosmopolitanism and national decomposition and, to that extent, a legitimate member of the Caesarian state, whose politics were really nothing but cosmopolitanism, whose national character was fundamentally nothing but humanity.” This is correct; indeed, the effect of the Diaspora was initially a corrosive one in a national sense, but with this the famous historian has only stated the negative side of this effect, which gives his entire account of the significance of the Jewish Diaspora in the Roman Empire the
*) Roman History III, 550 f., compare with V, 489 f. The fundamental error in Mommsen is that he considers the nationality and religion of the Jews to be identical ("their nationality or, what amounts to the same thing, their religion" V, 492). We believe we have shown that the Jewish religion is downright antinational.
