completely disappear. Thus those separating contingencies appear as frailties, in contrast to which there is only one permanent, unshakeable thing: "The Eternal reigns." This is also a fact that levels all differences, but it does not crush man like the power of death, but rather lifts him up.
Admittedly, the diversity of peoples cannot be denied and was established by God Himself, who assigned to each of them their territory. This also applies to Israel. "When the Most High gave the nations*) their inheritance, when he divided the sons of men, he set the boundaries of the peoples, according to the number of the children of Israel**)" (Deut. 32:8). But immediately, to prevent the misunderstanding that Israel could ever make its life's purpose dependent on the possession of land and be bound to the soil, it is added: "For the Eternal's portion is His people, Jacob the lot of His inheritance" (ibid. 9).
From this point of view, from which Israel is seen not so much as an owner, but rather as a possession itself, and indeed God's possession, a nativism grown together with the soil could not arise in it at all. Israel, like other peoples of antiquity, never laid claim to autochthony or aboriginism for itself. The arrogance of the native toward the foreigner did not exist in Israel, could not exist at all, for the native did not at all come from the consciousness, always kept alive within him—
*) The definite article is missing in the text.
**) I.e., Israel also received its land assigned from God just like the other peoples. Supplement למספר ב"י (עם), whereby in מספר the countability, the smallness of Israel is emphasized, which corresponds to the smallness of the land. To take עמים as synonymous with שבטים is impermissible because of the parallelism.
