"In distinction from Israel" is perhaps not stated exhaustively enough; it would be clearer and more unambiguous to say: in distinction from Israel's concept of a people, which is conditioned by its concept of God. For God here steps everywhere, so to speak, to the forefront, so that it is not actually Israel, but its God who is contrasted with the peoples, and in these, in turn, with their gods.

Denn Gott tntt hier überall, ſozu- ſagen, vor die Front, ſo daß nicht eigentlich Iſrael, ſon- dem ſein Gott den Völkem, und in dieſen wiederum ihren Göttem gegenübergestellt wird. „Der Ewige regiert, es frohlocket die Erde, es freut ſich der Inſeln Menge.“ (Ps. 97, 1.) „Der Ewige regiert, es zittem die Völker, er thront auf Cherubim, es wanket die Erde.“ (Ps. 98, 1.) „Erzählet unter den Völkem ſeine Herrlichkeit, unter allen Nationen ſeine Wunder.
