It is a historical fact that the Jews—or as they were originally, and with good reason are still, called, the Israelites—were once a people. Let us, however, investigate how that which makes a multitude of people into a nation—let us say the soul of the people or the national spirit—expresses itself among them, in what way they are similar in this to other peoples, and how, in turn, they differ from them! From the settlement in Palestine until the second destruction of Jerusalem, thus during the entire existence of the Israelite-Jewish people, all those phenomena emerge in them which we also encounter in other peoples and on which the national consciousness is based: unity of fatherland, language, religion, administration of justice, and custom. All the destinies of the people revolve around these common goods as their center. In this respect, the history of the people of Israel runs along the very same paths as that of other peoples. I. Daſſ die Juden, oder wie ſie ursprünglich hieſſen, aber auch jetzt noch mit gutem Rechte genannt werden, die Israeliten, einst ein Volk geweſen ſind, ist eine geschichtliche Thatsache. Unterſuchen wir jedoch, wie bei ihnen dasjenige, was eine Vielheit von Menschen zu einem Volke macht, ſagen wir die Volksſeel`e oder der nationale Geist, ſich äuſſert, inwiefem ſie hienn anderen Völkem gleichen und hiewiederum ſich von ihnen unterscheiden! Von der Seſſhaftmachung in Palästina bis zur zweiten Zerstörung Jeruſalems, alſo während des ganzen Bestandes des israelitisch-jüdischen Volkes treten in ihm alle jene Erscheinungen hervor, denen wir auch bei anderen Völkem begegnen und auf welchen das Volksbewußtſein beruht: Einheitlichkeit des Vaterlandes, der Sprache, Religion, Rechtspflege und Sitte. Um dieſe gemeinſamen Güter bewegen ſich als um ihren Mittelpunkt alle Geschicke des Volkes. Inſofem verläuft die Geschichte des Volkes Israel ganz in denſelben Bahnen, wie die anderer Völker.
