to help the Jews, Judaism perishes. A scientific and solely appropriate treatment must adhere to that which is in accordance with the eternal truths of Judaism and corresponds to the spirit of its history. An investigation of the recently raised and much-discussed national question from the standpoint of Jewish doctrine and history is therefore certainly of undisputed importance. And indeed, we add: not merely for the Jews. For the holy scripture of the Jews is also the holy scripture for the entire educated world, one of the foundations of its culture and civilization, into which the religion of Israel has engraved traces that cannot be erased by any contemporary trend, no matter how anti-Jewish. Therefore, an investigation into the concept of nationality and its meaning within the religion of Israel, as a contribution to the solution of the national question currently occupying the Jews, will be welcome to them, but may also count on general interest.

— 6 — Juden zu helfen, das Judenthum zu Grunde geht. Eine wissenschaftliche und allein angemessene Behandlung muß sich an dasjenige halten, was den ewigen Wahrheiten des Judenthums gemäß ist und dem Geiste seiner Geschichte entspncht. Es ist daher eine Untersuchung der neuerdings aufgeworfenen und vielbe- sprochenen nationalen Frage vom Standpunkte der jüdischen Lehre und Geschichte gewiß von unbestnttener Wichtigkeit. Und zwar fügen wir hinzu: nicht bloß für die Juden. Denn die heilige Schnft der Juden ist auch für die gesammte gebildete Welt die heilige Schnft, eine der Grundlagen ihrer Cultur und Gesittung, in welche die Religion Israels Spuren eingegraben hat, die durch keine noch so juden- feindliche Zeitströmung ausgelöscht werden können. Deshalb wird eine Untersuchung über den Nationalitätsbe- gnff und seine Bedeutung innerhalb der Religion Israels als Beitrag zur Lösung der die Ju- den gegenwärtig bewegenden nationalen Frage diesen will- kommen sein, aber auch auf allgemeines Interesse rechnen dürfen.
