D. "Defensive Training"

This military specialization is, for the Betar man, the first and most important among all the legionary "Trainings."

Let our definers come with the name "militarist." Do not fear the foreign word. There was a time when they tried to frighten the first Zionists, they too with the national term: "nationalism," they said: if a people has its own land and it wants to conquer for itself the lands of its neighbors as well, this is "bad nationalism"; and conversely, if a people has no homeland of its own at all and it demands for itself a patch of land, then this is "good nationalism" and there is nothing at all to be ashamed of. – And so it is also with "militarism." If a state that no one "bothers" begins to arm itself, in order to attack its neighbors and endanger their peace and security, then this is "bad militarism"; but if we, the Hebrews, who are beaten almost everywhere, and who in Persia and Yemen are threatened with complete annihilation, and in our own land [they threaten] our colonies and to destroy our settlements, - if we are armed to protect our lives, our property, and our future, then this is the "good militarism," and we are proud to be such militarists.

Every great colonization, in the history of peoples, was founded by war against the previous inhabitants of the land: there is no exception to this rule, so it was for the Persians, and so it is also in E.I. [Eretz Israel]. One who finds that the Arabs are right in their opposition to "Zionism," and more than anything to the idea of settling E.I., [can continue to think so,] but whoever thinks that the Jewish people have a sacred right to their historical homeland and that the opposition of the Arabs (a people of less than 40 million, but with a territory as large as half of all Europe) is an unjust opposition - must draw the logical conclusion: to stop chattering, and he must help to establish that same wall = the iron that will block every path before the danger.
