- The Orientalization of the entire Ancient Civilized World
Günther rightly emphasizes that when we speak of the "Jewish character which is alien to us," it is not only about Judaism, but about traits common to all peoples of Near Eastern and Oriental race. But the Jewish community became the most tenacious, self-confident, and most assertive carrier of the Near Eastern- Oriental blood and spirit. By this spirit, the great states founded by Nordic heroes were successively infected, whereby their decline was brought about:
the Persian world empire; the Greco-Macedonian world empire of Alexander the Great; the Roman Imperial world empire.
From the Orient, the shroud of death slowly laid itself over the entire ancient civilized world, over the so-called "circle of the earth," i.e., over all lands far and around the Mediterranean. The international cultural community was achieved, which still appears to many people today as the highest ideal: "Unified humanity." In truth, the Persians, the Greeks, the Romans successively gave up their ethnicity and their national culture in favor of Asia. Asia penetrated Europe; Asiatic blood and Asiatic spirit. The Asiatic gods, the Chaldean worldview spread across the Roman Empire; people allowed themselves to be infected by Asiatic vices. And the Roman emperors? They adopted the Asiatic theocracy, universalism, and absolutism; the deification of the ruler, the imperial cult with its temples and altars was something Oriental. In the beginning of the 3rd century A.D., worthless rulers of Oriental descent sat on the Roman imperial throne: Caracalla and Elagabal. When Diocletian renewed the empire around 300 A.D., he took Asiatic institutions and customs as a model for his "reforms."
International cultural community, unified humanity! The designation Roman-Jewish mixed and world culture seems better to me. "Roman-Jewish" i.e., "Rome" has been for almost 2000 years the epitome of all mixing and blurring, for the destruction of ethnic particularity, for a mishmash of peoples, mixing of blood, culture, and religion, for the equality of all that bears a human face. And in the midst of this "unified humanity," the Jews, the most zealous proclaimers of the international idea, asserted and saved their ethnicity. On the one hand, they separated themselves sharply from all other people; on the other hand, they sought to increase their influence on them, in order to guide them according to their will. We admire the tenacity with which those scattered throughout the world maintained their strong feeling of the closest solidarity in the midst of the mishmash of peoples.
Harnack has estimated the total number of Jews at the beginning of our era at 4-4.5 million; of which 1 million in Egypt, 1 million in Syria, 0.5 million in Palestine. He assumes that the Jews at the time of Emperor Augustus made up 7% of the total population of the Roman Empire. Above all, they lived in the large cities of the East: in Alexandria, out of 500,000 inhabitants, 200,000 were said to have been Jews; it was similar in Antioch and the other newly founded Greek cities of the Orient. Later they also penetrated into the West; at the time of Emperor Augustus, about 15,000 Jews may have lived in Rome.

Die Onentalisierung der ganzen Alten Kulturwelt Mit Recht betont Günther, daß, wenn wir von der "uns fremdartigen jüdischen Eigenart" sprechen, es ſich nicht nur um das Judentum handelt, ſondem um allen Völkem vorderaſiatischer und onentalischer Raſſe gemeinſame Züge. Aber die Judenschaft wurde der zäheste, ſelbstbewußteste und ſich am meisten durchſetzende Träger des vorderaſiatisch- onentalischen Blutes und Geistes. Von dieſem Geiste ließen ſich nacheinander die von nordischen Helden gegründeten Großstaaten verſeuchen, wodurch ihr Verfall herbeigeführt wurde: das perſische Weltreich; das gnechisch-mazedonische Weltreich Alexanders des Großen; das römische Kaiſer-Weltreich. Vom Onent her legte ſich langſam das Leichentuch des Todes über die ganze alte Kulturwelt, über den ſogenannten "Erdkreis", d.h. über alle Länder weit und um das Mittelmeer. Die intemationale Kulturgemeinschaft war erreicht, die heute noch von vielen Menschen als das höchste Ideal erscheint: "Die einheitliche Menschheit". In Wahrheit gaben nacheinander die Perſer, die Gnechen, die Römer ihr Volkstum und ihre nationale Kultur preis zugunsten Asiens. Aſien drang in Europa ein; aſiatisches Blut und aſiatischer Geist. Die aſiatischen Götter, die chaldäische Weltanschauung verbreiteten ſich über das Römische Reich; die Menschen ließen ſich durch aſiatische Laster verſeuchen. Und die römischen Kaiſer? Sie übemahmen die aſiatische Theokratie, den Univerſalismus und Abſolutismus; die Vergottung des Herrschers, der Kaiſerkult mit ſeinen Tempeln und Altären war etwas Onentalisches. Im Anfang des 3. Jahrhunderts n. Chr. ſaßen nichtswürdige Herrscher onentalischer Abstammung auf dem römischen Kaiſerthron: Caracalla und Elagabal. Als Diokletian um 300 n. Chr. das Reich emeuerte, nahm er ſich bei ſeinen "Reformen" aſiatische Einnchtungen und Gebräuche zum Vorbild. Intemationale Kulturgemeinschaft, einheitliche Menschheit! Beſſer erscheint mir die Bezeichnung römisch-jüdische Misch- und Weltkultur. "Römisch-jüdisch" d.h. "Rom" ist ſeit beinahe 2000 Jahren der Inbegnff für alle Vermischung und Verwischung, für die Vemichtung völkischer Eigenart, für Völkerbrei, Blut-, Kultur- und Religionsmischung, für die Gleichheit alles desſen, was Menschenantlitz trägt. Und inmitten dieſer "einheitlichen Menschheit" behaupteten und retteten die Juden, die eifngsten Verkünder des intemationalen Gedankens, ihr Volkstum. Sie ſonderten ſich einerſeits scharf von allen übngen Menschen ab; andererſeits ſuchten ſie ihren Einfluß auf dieſelben zu steigem, um ſie nach ihrem Willen zu leiten. Wir bewundem die Zähigkeit, womit die Weltzerstreuten mitten im Völkerbrei ihr starkes Gefühl der engsten Zuſammengehöngkeit behaupteten. Hamack hat die Geſamtzahl der Juden zu Beginn unſerer Zeitrechnung auf 4-4,5 Millionen geschätzt; davon in Ägypten 1 Million, in Synen 1 Million, in Palästina 0,5 Million. Er nimmt an, die Juden hätten zur Zeit des Kaiſers Augustus 7 % der Geſamtbevölkerung des Römischen Reiches ausgemacht. Vor allem wohnten ſie in den Großstädten des Ostens: in Alexandna ſollen von 500.000 Einwohnem 200.000 Juden geweſen ſein; ähnlich war es in Antiochia und den anderen neu gegründeten Gnechenstädten des Onents. Später drangen ſie auch in den Westen ein; zur Zeit des Kaiſers Augustus mögen etwa 15.000 Juden in Rom gewohnt haben. - 39 -
