For the rest, the impression that the study of the Septuagint has left on me is a heartfelt love and intimate reverence for the great King Nebuchadnezzar, even if he proceeded somewhat too leniently with a people who considered themselves to have a god who gave and promised them the lands of their neighbors, in whose possession they then established themselves through robbery and murder, and then built a temple to that god. May every people that considers itself to have a god who makes neighboring lands into 'lands of promise' find its Nebuchadnezzar in time, and its Antiochus Epiphanes to boot, and may no further ceremony be made with it!" "The eternal Jew Ahasverus is nothing other than the personification of the entire Jewish people... The fatherland of the Jews is the other Jews; therefore he fights for them as pro ara et focis (for altar and hearth), and no community on earth holds together as firmly as this one. From this it follows how absurd it is to want to grant them a share in the government or administration of a state. Their religion, from the outset merged and one with their state, is by no means the main thing, but rather only the bond which holds them together and the watchword by which they recognize each other. This is also shown by the fact that even the baptized Jew by no means, as is otherwise the case with all apostates, incurs the hatred and abhorrence of the others, but rather as a rule does not cease to be their friend and comrade and to regard them as his true countrymen. Even during the regular and solemn prayer of the Jews, for which ten must be united, if one is missing, a baptized Jew can stand in for him, but no other Christian."
"Accordingly, it is an error if the Jews are regarded merely as a religious sect; but if, to promote this error, Judaism is designated with an expression borrowed from the Christian church as the 'Jewish Confession,' then this is a fundamentally false expression, calculated to mislead, which should not be permitted at all. Die Menschheit schaudert bei der Erzählung dieser schrecklichen Grausamkeiten ... Wir sind versucht, der strengen Vergeltung Beifall zu zollen, welche durch die Waffen der Legionen gegen eine Rasse von Fanatikem geübt wurde, deren schrecklicher und leicht entzündlicher Aberglaube sie zu unversöhnlichen Feinden nicht nur der römischen Regierung, sondem des ganzen Menschengeschlechtes machte. „Geschichte des römischen Weltreiches“, 1854, III. 16. Daraus geht hervor, wie absurd es ist, ihnen einen Anteil an der Regierung oder Verwaltung eines Staates einräumen zu wollen. Ihre Religion, von Hause aus mit ihrem Staate verschmolzen und eins, ist dabei keineswegs die Hauptsache, vielmehr nur das Band, welches sie zusammenhält und das Feldgeschrei, daran sie sich erkennen. Dies zeigt sich auch daran, daß sogar der getaufte Jude keineswegs, wie doch sonst alle Apostaten, den Haß und Abscheu der übngen auf sich ladet, vielmehr in der Regel nicht aufhört, Freund und Genosse derselben zu sein und sie als seine wahren Landsleute zu betrachten. Sogar kann bei dem regelmäßigen und feierlichen Gebete der Juden, zu welchem zehn vereint sein müssen, wenn einer mangelt, ein getaufter Jude dafür eintreten, jedoch kein anderer Chnst.“ „Demnach ist es ein Irrthum, wenn die Juden bloß als Religionssekte betrachtet werden; wenn aber gar, um diesen Irrthum zu begünstigen, das Judentum mit einem der chnstlichen Kirche entlehnten Ausdruck bezeichnet wird als ‚Jüdische Konfession‘, so ist dies ein grundfalscher, auf das Irreleiten berechneter Ausdruck, der gar nicht gestattet sein sollte.
