Thomas Carlyle, born 1795, died 1881, had a genuinely Teutonic aversion to the Jews, of whom he said that they "deal only in money, gold, jewels, and old clothes, real or spiritual; they have contributed nothing to true wealth." From the biography of Th. Carlyle by Froude.
Grillparzer, born 1791, died 1872, composed the following mocking poem about the Jewish reviewer Dr. Saphir:
"The devil wanted to create a monster and for it took the stuff of many an animal; Wolf, fox, and jackal gave their share, only one thing the man of honor forgot: courage. Then he pushed in its nose full of rage and cried: Scoundrel, become a Jew and review."
Christian Dietrich Grabbe 1801-1836 Jewish boys, whose education consists of eating pork, puff themselves up to play the critical judge, and not only elevate purveyors of mediocrity to the stars, but even injure honorable men with their praise. Wilhelm Meinhold Born 1797, died 1851 In Vienna, the rich Jewish bankers, stock market speculators, etc., now imitate the rich nobility in all the details of luxury, especially the hunt for beautiful girls. Their own (Jewish) girls and women are too good for them to be sacrificed to lust. They protect them and do not aim for their seduction and degradation, they stand by them in all hardships, they do not let them fall, and therefore seek among the tribes (namely the Christians) to be such servants, the purest and most untouched virgins. The richest among them gladly let the less rich have the leftovers of their meal. And when the entire Jewish moneyed aristocracy has sated itself on innocence, only then are their victims left to poor Christendom, and they then sink into the abysses of the most common prostitution. The nobility combines with its vices remnants of old, self-inherited virtues; it is generous and preserves for the victims of its lust a remnant of better feelings, but the Jew throws his victim away and tramples it with his feet. - And just as in Vienna it is mainly the poorer Jews who are said to be engaged in the pimping trade, so they also excel in it in Hamburg. The obscene books, copperplate engravings, etc., are sold here by Jews, indeed one of the most notorious of these scoundrels is said to have offered himself to the police as a spy in exchange for permission for this business. Ihre eigenen (jüdischen) Mädchen und Weiber sind ihnen zu gut, um sie der Wollust zu opfem. Sie schützen ſie und gehen nicht nur auf ihre Verführung und Herabwürdigung, ſie stehen ihnen bei in allen Bedrängnissen, sie laſſen ſie nicht fallen und ſuchen daher unter den Stämmen ſolche Knechte zu ſein (nämlich die Chnsten), die reinsten und unberührtesten Jungfrauen. Die Reichsten unter ihnen laſſen dem minder Reichen geme die Reste ihrer Mahlzeit zukommen. Und wenn ſich die ganze jüdische Gelddanstokratie an der Unschuld geſättigt hat, dann erst werden ihre Opfer der armen Chnstenheit überlaſſen, und ſie verſinken dann in die Abgründe der gemeinsten Prostitution. Der Adel verbindet ſich mit ſeinen Lastem Reste altſelbst ererbter Tugenden; er ist freigebig und bewahrt den Opfem ſeiner Wollust noch einen Rest von beſſeren Gefühlen, aber der Jude wirft ſein Opfer weg und tntt es mit Füßen. - Und wie außerdem in Wien hauptſächlich die ärmeren Juden das Kupplergewerbe treiben ſollen, ſo exzellieren ſie dann auch in Hamburg. Die obſcönen Bücher, Kupferstiche usw. werden hier von Juden verkauft, ja einer der berüchtigsten dieser Schandbuben ſoll für die Erlaubnis dieſes Vertnebes ſich der Polizei als einen Spion hergegeben haben.
