among the Catholic and Latin ones, where the blindness of the old liberalism has particularly strongly favored the Jews, while they persecuted the Catholics and above all the religious orders. The danger grows greater from day to day... Although we are not, like some, all too inclined to burden the Jews with all the blame for the evils that have afflicted modern society, especially Europe, we have nevertheless, e.g., in the question of Bolshevism, tried to make clear what guilt and what predominant influence the misguided people of the Jews have in the Russian Revolution, as indeed also in the French and more recently in the Hungarian Revolution with all their evils, cruelties, and savage horrors... Jewish propaganda is partly in the closest connection with the Masonic and Bolshevik. One does not understand how it can still be protected by governments that show they are determined to fight Freemasonry and all other liberal, socialist, or communist propaganda. It has already led in less than a century from a state of full tolerance or even favoritism, thus more than simple freedom or equality granted to the Jews, to their hegemony in many parts of public life, especially in the economy and industry, not to mention high finance, where they were granted a downright dictatorial supremacy, which can give laws to states and governments, also in matters concerning politics, and of course especially in financial matters, without fear of rivalry, as occurred during the war. This fact, truly a strange phenomenon, cannot be explained, let alone justified, by the number of Jews living in the respective countries. It has its reason rather in the secret Jewish interference, which has thus led to a power not due to them, which is in no proportion to their number, and which, moreover, contradicts reason and the common good." After the journal has presented the minority ratios of the Jews in the individual countries with a few figures, it further remarks: "And with all this, they hold the leading posts in big industry, in high finance, in diplomacy, and even more so in the secret societies, so that they can work towards their world hegemony... What is most regrettable, however, is not only that the peoples resign themselves to this state of affairs, but that they even accept it with pleasure and promote it, just as, by the way, the so-called League of Nations also promotes secret Jewish interference."
More insight could hardly be expected in these circles. Is this not a brilliant justification of the attitude of National Socialist Germany? But one must not overestimate the significance of this article. With it, Rome only drew a line under the fiasco with the "Society of the Friends of Israel." Nothing more. One may never conclude from this that Rome would now open the fight against the lamented Jewish phenomena. Rome will be careful, because despite this attack at the time, Rome needs Judaism.
Nevertheless, such remarks are of no small significance in view of Rome's fierce struggle against Germany, for if anti-Judaism is "un-Christian," then of course so is the occasional "anti-Judaism" of the Vatican or the Jesuits! In this respect, a Roman document dealing with the question of Jewish ritual murder carries particular weight. In 1930, the documents from the diplomatic correspondence of the Tsarist ministers were published in a special volume. Here are also found letters that were exchanged in 1913 between the Russian Foreign Minister Sazonov and D. Gélidow, the Russian plenipotentiary to the Vatican. bei den katholischen und lateinischen, wo die Blindheit des alten Liberalismus die Juden beſonders stark begünstigt hat, während ſie die Katholiken und vor allem die, Orden verfolgten. Die Gefahr wird von Tag zu Tag größer ... Wenn wir auch nicht wie einige allzu leicht geneigt ſind, den Juden jede Schuld für die Übel, die die modeme Geſellschaft beſonders Europa, betroffen haben, aufbürden, ſo haben wir doch, z. B. in der Frage des Bolschewismus, verſucht, klarzustellen, welche Schuld und welch überwiegender Einfluß das irregeleitete Volk der Juden bei der ruſſischen Revolution tnfft, wie ja auch schon in der franzöſischen und neuerdings in der unganschen Revolution mit all ihren Übeln, Grauſamkeiten und wilden Schrecken ... Die jüdische Propaganda steht zum Teil in engster Verbindung mit der freimaurenschen und bolschewistischen. Man versteht nicht, wie ſie von Regierungen, die doch zeigen, daß ſie die Freimaurerei und jede andere liberale, ſozialistische oder kommunstische Propaganda entschloſſen bekämpfen, noch geschützt werden kann. Sie hat bereits in weniger als einem Jahrhundert vom Zustand voller Duldung oder ſogar Begünstigung, alſo mehr als einfacher Freiheit oder Gleichheit, die den Juden zugebilligt wurde, zu ihrer Hegemonie in vielen Teilen des öffentlichen Lebens, beſonders in der Wirtschaft und Industne geführt, ganz zu schweigen von der Hochfinanz, wo ihnen geradezu eine diktatonale Übermacht eingeräumt wurde, welche Staaten und Regierungen Geſetze geben kann, auch in Dingen, die die Politik angehen, natürlich erst recht in finanziellen Dingen, ohne Sorge vor Rivalität, wie es während des Kneges vorkam. Dieſe Tatſache, wahrlich eine befremdliche Erscheinung, kann nicht erklärt, geschweige denn gerechtfertigt werden durch die Zahl der Juden, die in den betreffenden Ländem wohnen. Sie hat vielmehr ihren Grund in der geheimen jüdischen Einmischung, welche ſolchermaßen zu einer ihnen nicht zukommenden Macht geführt hat, die in gar keinem Verhältniß mehr steht zu ihrer Zahl, und überdies der Vemunft und dem allgemeinen Wohl widerspncht." Nachdem die Zeitschnft an einigen Zahlen die Minontätsverhältniſſe der Juden in den einzelnen Ländem dargelegt hat, bemerkt ſie noch: "Und bei all dem haben ſie die führenden Posten in der Großindſutne, in der Hochfinanz, in der Diplomatie und mehr noch bei den Geheimgſellschaften inne, ſo daß ſie auf ihre Welthegemonie hinarbeiten können ... Was aber am betrüblichsten ist, das ist nicht nur, daß die Völker ſich in dieſen Zustand finden, ſondem daß ſie ihn noch wohlgefällig aufnehmen und ihn begünstigen, wie übngens auch der ſogenannte Völkerbund die geheime jüdische Einmischung begünstigt." Mehr Einſicht könnte man in dieſen Kreiſen kaum erwarten. Ist das nicht eine glänzende Rechtfertigung der Haltung des nationalſozialistischen Deutschland? Aber man wird die Bedeutung dieſes Artikels nicht überschätzen dürfen. Mit ihm zog Rom nur den Schlußstnch unter den Hereinfall mit der "Geſellschaft der Freunde Israels". Mehr nicht. Niemals wird man daraus folgem dürfen, nun werde Rom gegen die beklagten jüdischen Erscheinungen den Kampf eröffnen. Rom wird ſich hüten, denn trotz dieſes damaligen Angnffs braucht Rom das Judentum. Immerhin haben ſolche Auslaſſungen in Hinblick auf den heftigen Kampf Roms gegen Deutschland nicht gennge Bedeutung, denn wenn Antijudaismus "unchnstlich" ist, dann ist es ſelbstverständlich auch der gelegentliche "Antijudaismus" des Vatikans oder der Jeſuiten! In dieſer Beziehung wiegt eine römische Urkunde beſonders schwer, die ſich mit der Frage des jüdischen Ritualmordes befaßt. Im Jahre 1930 erschienen die Dokumente aus der diplomatischen Korrespondenz der zanstischen Minister in einem beſonderen Band. Hier finden ſich auch Bnefe, die zwischen dem ruſſischen Außenminister Saſſonow und D. Gelildow, dem ruſſischen Bevollmächtigten beim Vatikan, im Jahre 1913 gewechſelt worden ſind. Sie knüpfen an ein von Lord Rothschild (London) an den Papst genchtetes Schreiben an. Dieſes wies auf den damals in Rußland spielenden Beilis Ritualmordprozeß hin und brachte - 157 -
