to pray in general and in doing so 'looked into the hearts of all the saints'. Our Lord Jesus Christ, however, said of the Law of Moses that he had come not to abolish it but to fulfill it, and that not one iota of the Law should be lost until all is fulfilled. Among his last words on the cross are two psalm verses, and he himself interpreted his sacrifice on the cross to his disciples in the light of Old Testament prophecy."
From this it becomes quite clear what is to be understood here by the concept of substance. Christianity is the logical fulfillment of Judaism.
This can also be clearly read in the Roman liturgy. In the Missale Romanum, the missal used for reading the Roman Mass, which contains the prescribed prayers, there is also one that contains a plea to God (namely the Jewish God Jehovah) to let all peoples and men become Jews:
"God, we see Your ancient miracles still shining in our time; for what You did with a mighty hand for one people when You saved it from the pursuing Egyptians, You work today for the salvation of all gentile peoples through the water of rebirth: Grant now that the entire world and humanity may enter into the sonship of Abraham and the dignity of the people of Israel."
This prayer is prescribed for Holy Saturday. On Good Friday, however, the Roman Church prays for the faithless Jews, that they may convert again to salvation.
When a Roman bishop receives his consecration and the mitre (the bishop's hat) is placed on his head as a sign of his dignity, the consecrating archbishop says the following prayer.
"We place, O Lord, on the head of this church leader and Your champion the helmet of strength and salvation, so that, with his face thus adorned and with his head armed with the horns of the two testaments, he may appear fearsome to the enemies of truth, and, instructed by Your grace, he may be a vigorous combatant of the opponents. Through a conversation with You, You adorned the face of Your servant Moses and then distinguished it with the brightly shining horns of Your clarity and truth. You commanded Aaron, Your high priest, to put on the high priestly hat, through Christ our Lord."
At a wedding, the Roman priest prays in the nuptial mass:
"Strengthen, O God, what You have wrought in us, from Your holy temple, which is in Jerusalem. Send the bridal couple help from the sanctuary and protect them from Zion."
These examples could be multiplied at will. Without this substance, no Christian church can exist, but this substance is, as already said, what makes the churches so dangerous as a spiritual counter-power in today's state and for the education of the people. Moreover, the churches, equipped with this spirit from which they cannot detach themselves, must become hoards of political reaction.
The judgment of the early church about the Jews, which Harnack ("Mission and Expansion of Christianity", Vol. 1) reproduces in the following words, is probably completely overcome today: "The Jews are the worst, most godless, and most godforsaken people among all peoples, the actual devil's people, the synagogue of Satan, the company of

überhaupt geme gebetet und dabei 'allen Heiligen ins Herz geſehen'. Unſer Herr Jeſus Chnstus hat aber von dem Geſetz Moſes geſagt, er ſei gekommen, nicht es aufzulöſen, ſondem es zu erfüllen, und es ſolle kein Jota vom Geſetz verlorengehen, bis daß es alles erfüllet werde. Unter ſeinen letzten Worten am Kreuze ſind zwei Pſalmworte, und er ſelbst hat ſeinen Jüngem ſein Kreuzeſopfer im Lichte der alttestamentlichen Weiſſagung gedeutet." Daraus ergibt ſich wohl mit aller Klarheit, was hier unter dem Begnff der Substanz verstanden ſein will. Das Chnstentum ist die logische Erfüllung des Judentums. Das läßt ſich auch eindeutig aus der römischen Liturgie ableſen. Im Miſſale Romanum, dem zum Leſen der römischen Meſſe benutzten Meßbuch, das die vorgeschnebenen Gebete enthält, ist auch eines enthalten, das eine Bitte an Gott (nämlich den Judengott Jehova) enthält, alle Völker und Menschen zu Juden werden zu laſſen: "Gott, Deine alten Wundertaten ſehen wir auch in unſerer Zeit noch erstrahlen; denn was Du mit mächtiger Hand dem einen Volke tatest, als Du es vor den verfolgenden Ägyptem rettetest, das wirkst Du zum Heile aller Heidenvölker heute noch durch das Waſſer der Wiedergeburt: Gewähre nun, daß zur Kindschaft Abrahams und zur Würde des Volkes Iſrael die ganze Welt und Menschheit eingehen möge." Dieſes Gebet ist am Karsamstag vorgeschneben. Am Karfreitag betet die römische Kirche aber für die treuloſen Juden, daß ſie ſich wieder zum Heil bekehren ſollen. Wenn ein römischer Bischof ſeine Weihe empfängt und ihm zum Zeichen ſeiner Würde die Mitra (der Bischofshut) aufs Haupt geſetzt wird, spncht der weihende Erzbischof folgendes Gebet. "Wir ſetzen, o Herr, auf das Haupt dieſes Kirchenvorstehers und Deines Vorkämpfers den Helm der Festigkeit und des Heiles, auf daß er schon durch ſein damit geschmücktes Angeſicht und durch ſein mit den Hömem der beiden Testamente bewaffnetes Haupt furchtbar erscheine den Gegnem der Wahrheit, und unter Belehrung Deiner Gnade er ein tatkräftiger Bekämpfer der Gegner ſei. Du hast durch eine Unterredung mit Dir das Antlitz Deines Dieners Moſes geschmückt und es dann durch ſeine stark leuchtenden Hömer Deiner Klarheit und Wahrheit ausgezeihnet. Du hast befohlen, Aron, Deinem hohen Pnester, den hohen pnesterlichen Hut aufzuſetzen, durch Chnstus unſeren Herm." Bei der Eheschließung betet der römische Pnester in der Brautmeſſe: "Befestige, o Gott, was Du in uns gewirkt hast, von Deinem heiligen Tempel, der da ist in Jeruſalem. Sende den Brautleuten Hilfe vom Heiligtum und von Zion aus beschütze ſie." Dieſe Beispiele ließen ſich beliebig vermehren. Ohne dieſe Substanz kann keine chnstliche Kirche bestehen, dieſe Substanz ist aber, wie schon geſagt, das, was die Kirchen zur geistigen Gegenmacht im heutigen Staate und für die Volkserziehung ſo gefährlich macht. Außerdem müſſen die Kirchen, mit dieſem Geist, von dem ſie ſich nicht löſen können, ausgestattet, zu Horten der politischen Reaktion werden. Das Urteil der alten Kirche über die Juden, das Hamack ("Miſſion und Ausbreitung des Chnstentums", 1. Bd.) in den nachstehenden Worten wiedergibt, ist heute wohl völlig überwunden: "Die Juden ſind das schlimmste, gottloſeste und gottverlaſſenste Volk unter allen Völkem, das eigentliche Teufelsvolk, die Synagoge des Satans, die Genoſſenschaft der - 153 -
