Just as all sorts of circumstances occasionally come to the aid of audacious people, so too did the partiality and clumsiness of his judges perhaps contribute more to Ahlwardt's fame than he himself did.
The transgressions and presumptions of a District Court Director Brausewetter in the Jew-Rifles trial ignited a storm of indignation throughout the country — even into the camp of his opponents — and earned the defendant Ahlwardt sympathies that he himself would have hardly been able to win.
It was actually Mr. Brausewetter who conquered the electoral district of Arnswalde-Friedeberg for Ahlwardt, who was sitting in prison.
Subsequently, in his appearances at public meetings, Ahlwardt also demonstrated a certain popular gift for oratory.
It is that eloquence which is based on a high self-esteem and a certain imagination, and which occasionally does not take the strict facts too seriously.
Although Ahlwardt is a Pomeranian, he has adopted the Berlin manner of talking big to a high degree, and something like that does not fail to have its effect on less discerning and distant people.
He is called to the role of a great party leader just as little by spirit as by character.
He thus goes his own way to this day, without affiliating with the existing anti-Semitic party organizations.

342 fache Prozeſſe und schwere Verurtheilungen ein. — Wie verwegenen Leuten gelegentlich allerlei Umstände zu Hilfe kommen, ſo hat auch zu Ahlwardt’s Berühmt- heit vielleicht die Parteiümlichkeit und das Ungeschick ſeiner Richter mehr beigetragen als er ſelber. Die Verstöße und Anmaßungen eines Landgenchts-Direktor Brauſe- wetter im Judenſlinten-Prozeß entfachten überall im Lande — ſelbst bis in das Lager der Gegner hinein — einen Entrüstungs-Sturm und trugen dem Angeklagten Ahlwardt Sympathien ein, die er ſelber ſich schwerlich zu gewinnen vermocht hätte. Herr Brauſewetter war es eigentlich, der dem im Gefängniß ſitzenden Ahlwardt den Wahlkreis Amswalde-Fnedeberg eroberte. In der Folge hat Ahlwardt bei ſeinem Auftreten in öffentlichen Verſammlungen auch eine gewiſſe volks- thümliche Redeſgabe bekundet. Es ist jene Beredtſam- keit, die auf einer hohen Selbst-Einschätzung und einer gewiſſen Phantaſie fußt und es gelegentlich mit den strengen Thatſachen nicht zu genau nimmt. Wiewohl Ahlwardt ein Pommer ist, hat er ſich doch die berliner Manier des Mund-voll-nehmens in hohem Grade zu eigen gemacht, und ſo etwas verfehlt ja auf weniger urtheilsfähige und femstehende Leute ſeine Wirkung nicht. Zur Rolle eines großen Parteiführers ist U. ebenſo wenig von Geist wie von Charakter berufen. Er geht denn auch bis heute ſeinen eigenen Weg ohne Anschluß an die bestehenden antiſemitischen Partei- Organiſationen.
