The question of whether Ahlwardt has helped or harmed the anti-Semitic cause is still considered an open one today. His trials have certainly drawn the attention of the widest circles to existing grievances, and in the strata where one does not proceed too scrupulously with the weighing of intellectual and character abilities, Ahlwardt has won many followers; in the circles of the educated, on the other hand, he is likely to have repelled just as many. But here again the mistake is made of holding the entirety of anti-Semitism responsible for the failures and weaknesses of a single individual, and of not knowing how to separate the person from the cause. In any case, one may be reassured: for a just cause, all things must ultimately work for the best, and so the Ahlwardt commotion will not be without benefit for the anti-Semitic movement.
For the time being, Ahlwardt is passing through the same stages as Dr. Böckel half a decade before him: In his rapidly won popularity, he considers himself a kind of messiah, or at the very least the solely appointed representative of anti-Semitism. He wages war against all who were active in the same work before him and describes people like Stöcker, Liebermann, and Böckel as incompetent and dishonest. — It is regrettable — but on the other hand explainable by the youth of the movement — that people are always found who, through a misplaced personality cult,

343 Die Frage, ob Ahlwardt der antiſemitischen Sache mehr genüßt oder geschadet habe, gilt heute noch als eine offene. Sicher haben ſeine Prozeſſe die Aufmerkſamkeit der weitesten Kreiſe auf bestehende Mißstände gelenkt, und in den Schichten, wo man mit der Abwägung der Geistes- und Charakter-Fähigkeiten nicht allzu peinlich verfährt, hat Ahlwardt viele Anhänger gewonnen; in den Kreiſen der Gebildeten hingegen dürfte er ebenſo viele abgestoßen haben. Nur begeht man hierbei wieder den Fehler, daß man den geſammten Antiſemitismus für die Mißgnffe und Schwächen einer einzelnen Perſon verantwortlich macht und Perſon und Sache nicht auſeinander zu halten weiß. Immerhin mag man ſich beruhigen: einer gerechten Sache müſſen schließlich alle Dinge zum Besten dienen, und ſo wird auch der Ahlwardt-Rummel für die antiſemitische Bewegung nicht ohne Nutzen ſein. Einstweilen durchwandelt Ahlwardt dieſelben Stadien, wie Dr. Böckel ein halbes Jahrzehnt vor ihm: In ſeiner rasch errungenen Populantät hält er ſich für eine Art Meſſias, zum mindesten aber für den einzig beruſenen Vertreter des Antiſemitismus. Er führt Kneg gegen Alle, die vor ihm am ſelben Werke thätig waren und bezeichnet Leute wie Stöcker, Liebermann und Böckel für unfähig und unehrlich. — Bedauerlich — aber anderſerſeits aus der Jugend der Bewegung erklärlich — ist es, daß ſich immer Leute finden, die durch einen schlecht angebrachten Perſonen-Kultus
