As disgraceful as wage labor, commerce also appears to Romanians of the better sort. Only in the region of Craiova, in Little Wallachia, are there capable Romanian merchants. Otherwise, since time immemorial, wholesale and retail trade has been left to the Jews.
Thus, as the Romanians themselves acknowledge, the Jewish population of Romania is in a certain sense a necessity for this country. Nevertheless, hatred of Jews in Romania is, if one wants to be considered a decent, socially acceptable person, as necessary and self-evident as clean laundry and an untorn coat. It has happened several times to the correspondent of the "Kölnische Zeitung," in the company of the first and most highly educated men of the country, to hear statements such as: "We have admired the German people and Prince Bismarck for years, but now that we may hope that Germany will proceed and set the example for the extermination or expulsion of the Jews from Europe, we love it enthusiastically. We are only waiting for Germany to act." It is incorrect that the anti-Semitic movement in Berlin has turned the heads of the people in Romania. Sonst ist seit Alters her Großhandel und Kleinkrämerei den Juden überlassen geblieben. Sonach ist, wie die Rumänen selbst anerkennen, die jüdische Bevölkerung Rumäniens in gewissem Sinne eine Nothwendigkeit für dieses Land. Trotzdem ist der Judenhass in Rumänien, wenn man als anständiger, geſellschaftsfähiger Mensch gelten will, so nöthig und selbstverständlich wie reine Wäsche und ein unzenssener Rock. Dem Benchterstatter der „Kölnischer Zeitung“ ist es mehrmals begegnet, in Geſellschaft der ersten und hochgebildeten Männer des Landes Aeußerungen zu hören, wie: „Wir bewundem das deutsche Volk und den Fürsten Bismarck seit Jahren, aber seit wir nun hoffen dürfen, daß Deutschland vorgehen und das Beispiel geben wird zur Ausrottung oder Vertreibung der Juden aus Europa, lieben wir es begeistert. Wir warten nur auf das Vorgehen Deutschlands.“ Unzutreffend ist, daß die antisemitische Bewegung in Berlin den Leuten in Rumänien die Köpfe verdreht habe.
