Yet a few years later, fate would have it that the very estates of Baron von Palochay fell into Jewish hands, and currently the respective tenant is: Moses Geiger, far more respected (?) and more powerful than the last Baron von Palochay, who died in 1856, ever was.
The Jews are most numerous in proportion to the total population present in Ungh County, where every ninth person, then in Marmaros, where every tenth, and in Zemplin County, where nearly every tenth person is a Jew.
There are also places in Upper Hungary where almost as many or even more Jews than Christians live.
This is the case, for example, in Also-Bereczka, in the village of Márton-Falva near Szantó, in Karácsonyfalva in Marmaros, in Ladomér in Sáros County, and in Munkacs.
In the last-mentioned market town live no fewer than 2170 Jews.
Starting with the Marmaros salt mines, whose sales, representing millions, are handled by Jews, down to the most minor undertakings, virtually all trade and commerce in the Ruthenian territory originates from them, and in this respect it is certainly characteristic that in the voter list of the Naschau Chamber of Commerce and Industry for the Hust

136 Juden bloß darum 24 Stockstreiche aufmessen ließ, weil er die Anfrage gewagt hatte: ob er nicht bei einer Verpachtungs-Licitativn als Concurrent auftreten dürfe? Doch wenige Jahre später fügte es das Schicksal, daß gerade die Güter des Freiherm von Palochay in Judenhände genethen und dermalen ist der bezügliche Pächter: Moses Geiger, weit angesehener (?) und mächtiger, als der im Jahre 1856 verstorbene letzte Freiherr von Palochay war. Am zahlreichsten sind die Juden im Verhältniß zur anwesenden Gesammtbevölkerung im Ungher Comitate, wo jeder neunte, dann im Marmaroser, wo jeder zehnte, und im Zempliner Comitate, wo nahezu jeder zehnte Mensch ein Jude ist. Es giebt auch Orte in Ober-Ungam, wo beinahe ebensoviele oder gar mehr Juden als Chnsten wohnen. Dies ist z. B. zu AlsoBereczka, im Dorfe Márton-Falva bei Szantó, zu Karácsonyfalva in der Marmaros, zu Ladomér im Sároser Comitate und zu Munkacs der Fall. In dem letztgenannten Marktflecken wohnen nicht weniger als 2170 Juden. Von den Marmaroser Salinen angefangen, deren Millionen repräsentirender Absatz von Juden besorgt wird, bis zu den allergenngsten Untemehmungen herab, geht sozusagen aller Handel und Wandel im Ruthenengebiet von ihnen aus und es ist in dieser Beziehung gewiß charaktenstisch, daß in der Wählerliste der Naschauer Handels- und Gewerbekammer beim Huster
