Since its unification with Ofen and Altoken, Budapest is probably the most Jewish city in Europe.
A large part of the Jews live from leasing the taverns, alongside which they also run a small trade (grocery). This is for the common people the most pernicious class, which the landlords have raised and are still raising with their right to sell spirits; through easily granted credit, which of course comes with usurious interest, they entice the uneducated folk, until their fortune and intellect are drowned in brandy, so that wife and children must waste away miserably. The municipalities follow the example of the landlords, for the tavern is leased at the highest price by the Jew.
The right to sell spirits is therefore just as harmful to the common country folk as it is fruitful for the Jews, who among the northern Hungarian population constitute the sober, always calculating, and therefore also always winning part. It is characteristic that the Jewish innkeeper and grocer prefers to seek out the Slovak, Ruthenian, and Romanian villages and thrives best here; in Magyar or even in German localities he does not get on well. Budapest ist ſeit der Vereinigung mit Ofen und Altoken wohl die judenreichste Stadt in Europa. Ein großer Theil der Juden lebt vom Pachte der Wirthshäuſer, neben welchem er noch einen Klein- handel (Krämerei) betreibt. Das ist für das gemeine Volk die verderblichste Claſſe, welche die Grundherren mit ihrem Schankrechte großgezogen haben und noch großziehen; durch leichtgewährten Credit, der freilich auf wuchensche Zinſen geht, verlocken ſie das unge- bildete Volk, bis deſſen Vermögen und Verstand im Branntwein untergeht, ſo daß Weib und Kinder elendiglich verkümmem müſſen. Die Gemeinden machen es den Grundherren nach, denn das Wirthshaus pachtet am theuersten der Jude. Das Schankrecht ist darum ebenſo schädlich für das gemeine Landvolk, wie fruchtbnngend für die Juden, die unter der nord-unganschen Bevölkerung den nüchtemen, stets berechnenden und deßhalb auch immer gewinnenden Theil ausmachen. Charaktenstisch ist, daß der jüdische Wirth und Krämer am liebsten die ſlovakischen, ruthenischen und rumänischen Dörfer aufſucht und hier am besten gedeiht; in magyanschen oder gar in deutschen Ortschaften kommt er nicht gut fort. Beweis deſſen, daß die dichtste jüdische Be-
