While all other ethnic elements of the country as a result of the cholera years of 1872 and 1873 show a population deficit, among the Jews at the end of 1873, there was an increase of 20,030 souls from the surplus of births alone, so that by natural means alone, the Israelite population of Hungary had risen to 572,164 heads by the end of the year 1873. If one adds the continuous immigration, especially from Galicia, which unfortunately is not subject to any statistical recording, one may estimate the present number of Jews in Hungary at 600,000 souls, i.e., one-tenth of all Jews in Europe.
Since the Edict of Tolerance in the year 1782, the Jews pushed into Pest in droves; although in the year 1836 only 224 families lived here with tolerance patents, their number at present (i.e., in the year 1872) is already 7586 souls. But how much the state of affairs has changed since then! Already in the year 1857, one counted in Marmaros 28,039, in Bereg-Ugovcsa 17,363, in Ung 10,818, in Zemplin 25,533, in Saros 12,194, in the Zips 3434, thus in these 7 Carpathian counties a total of 96,385 Jews, 11,000 more than in all of Hungary in the year 1785. Während alle übngen Volks-Elemente des Landes in Folge der Cholera-Jahre 1872 und 1873 ein Bevölkerungs-Deficit aufweisen, ergibt sich bei den Juden Ende 1873 nur an Ueberschuß der Geburten ein Zuwachs mit 20,030 Seelen, sodaß schon allein auf natürlichem Wege die israelitische Bevölkerung Ungams Ende des Jahres 1873 auf 572,164 Köpfe gestiegen war. Rechnet man die fortdauemde Zuwanderung, namentlich aus Galizien, hinzu, die leider keiner statistischen Aufzeichnung unterliegt, so wird man die gegenwärtige Zahl der Juden in Ungam auf 600,000 Seelen, d. i. ein Zehntel aller Juden in Europa, schätzen dürfen.
