The culture which has progressed from East to West during the historical development of humanity, has begun its return journey around the earth with the French Revolution. In a geographical respect, too, begins the transformation of the movement of life, which characterizes mature age everywhere; the self-contained, retrograde circular movement takes the place of the movement of progress, which eternally flees the center, and its diametrical opposite, stagnation. — The geographical center of culture, which lay dormant for millennia in a death-like torpor, after it had delivered to the world the light of the spirit, which had first awakened within it, as a divine revelation, will be given back to life. The French Tricolore has been planted in Egypt and Syria, and it is not merely a poetic, but a prophetic word, which the French poet called out after the Syrian expedition.
Already the old Napoleon, who undertook an expedition to Egypt, and the Saint-Simonians, from whose midst one now stands at the head of the Suez enterprise, have recognized the high significance of the civilization of the Orient for modern France. The French wars in the Crimea and in Italy were only preparations for the solution of the oriental question. The solution thereof is the reconciliation of today's occidental culture with the old oriental culture of the Semites, who have until now formed that ancient, world-historical, typical antithesis to the Indo-Germans, which Ernest Renan so sharply emphasizes, while also pointing out that the Semites, to a higher degree than the Indo-Germans, have the ability to reawaken from death to life.

Die Cultur welche während der geschichtlichen Entwicklung der Menschheit von Osten nach Westen fortgeschntten ist, hat mit der französischen Revolution ihre Rückreise um die Erde anzutreten begonnen. Auch in geographischer Beziehung beginnt die Umgestaltung der Lebensbewegung, welche das reife Lebensalter überall kennzeichnet; die in sich geschlossene rückläufige Kreisbewegung tntt an die Stelle der das Centrum ewig fliehenden Bewegung des Fortschntts und ihres diametralen Gegensatzes, der Erstarrung. — Das geographische Centrum der Cultur, welches Jahrtausende in einer todesähnlichen Erstarrung damiederlag, nachdem es der Welt das Licht des Geistes, welches in ihm zuerst erwacht war, als göttliche Offenbarung überliefert hatte, wird dem Leben wieder zurück gegeben werden.
