nation is not conceivable, if only because since the destruction of Jerusalem, Jewish prayer has everywhere revolved solely around the sorrow over the downfall and the hope for the resurrection of the Jewish nation. — The new formation of the cultus will necessarily go hand in hand with that of the nation.
(Meisl pp. 256, 257.) "It is certainly a high and beautiful thought when a person pleads with his God for the fate of his nation; but as much as I can empathize with the feelings of his pious soul in this, I can just as little escape the conviction that as soon as the nation (the restoration of its own state) perishes, the prayer for it, being completely unfulfillable in the future, must disappear from the heart of the pious, and its place must be taken by a prayer for the salvation and the ennoblement of the spirit of the community as a whole. The Jewish divine service, like the Christian, knows only a prayer for the salvation of the human race, for the well-being of the state under whose protection it finds itself, and for the salvation of the Jewish people, whose sons among all inhabitants of the earth faithfully profess its laws, i.e., for the well-being of the Israelite divine service. - XI.
The prayer for the restoration of the nation should, in the opinion of the author of the 2nd part of this work, be completely removed from public worship, even if the wish for a Jewish state should still live in the hearts of the faithful Jews. Cf. what is said here on p. 288 and the paragraph that follows it.
