The experiment, through which we, as it were, compel nature to answer the questions put to it, is not the only path that has positively led to the solution of the problem of how nature proceeded in the creation of the various organic species. We have already mentioned the observations which Admiral Du Petit-Thouars made on the islands of the South Sea and communicated to the Academy of Sciences. A far more detailed observation by our physiologist Johannes Müller establishes in a special way for the higher organisms what the experiment has established for the lower ones: the origin of the higher species by way of generatio spontanea.

220 Das Expenment, wodurch wir gleichſam die Natur zwin- gen, die an ſie gestellten Fragen zu beantworten, ist nicht der einzige Weg, der zur Löſung des Problems, wie die Natur bei der Schöpfung der verschiedenen organischen Spezies verfuhr, in poſitiver Weiſe geführt hat. Wir haben schon der Beobach- tungen gedacht, welche der Admiral Du Petit-Thouars auf den Inſeln der Südſee machte und der Akademie der Wiſſenschaften mittheilte. Eine weit eingehendere Beobachtung unſeres Phyſiologen Johannes Müller constatirt in spezieller Weiſe für die höhem Organiſmen, was das Expenment für die niedngem festgestellt hat: die Entstehung der höhem Arten auf dem Wege der generatio spontanea.
