...commands respect and—then even hatred, which was treated nowhere but as a backlash of the ignorance and useless, false philosophizing of a handful of idle, eccentric philosophers, the likes of whom would arise anew again and again, if we were once more to find the conditions that are able to darken Europe in an instant and plunge it into misery.
Who is able to disperse the cloud of catastrophe that still lies before us, because our modern development has been filled with error? — Certainly, no conflict between peoples, which today can only be undertaken for national independence, will conclude with the equal rights of all, according to those peoples who fight against it. But by what means will this goal ultimately be achieved, which peaceful or combat-ready German patriot dares even to think of it?
The times of monarchies are over; even the smallest people, belonging to our Germanic or Romanic, to the religious or classical, to the chivalrous or artistic race, may count on the sympathies of the almighty higher cultural stratum as soon as it asserts its claims and rights to a place among the European peoples—a cultural stratum that has today gained such a loyal confederate in the progressive nations. —
Just as the patriots of all other unfortunate peoples, so too can the German patriots only achieve the goal of their aspirations in a sincere alliance of friendship with these most advanced and most powerful peoples of the earth.

381 stellt Achtung und — dann ſelbst Haß, der nirgends als Rückschlag der Unkenntniß und des unnüßen, falschen Philoſo- phiens einer Handvoll müßiger, verschrobener Philoſophen be- handelt wurde, dergleichen es deren immer wieder von neuem entstanden würde, ob wir nochmals die Zustände vorfänden welche den Europa im Zug umdunkelt und in Elend zu ſetzen vermag. Wer vermag die Katastrophenmäßiger zu heben, die uns noch bevorstehen, weil unſere modeme Entwicklung in Irrthum erfüllet werden? — Sicher wird kein Völkerkampf, der heute nur noch um die nationale Unabhängigkeit untemommen kann, mit der Gleichberechtigung ganz oder, nach verspönigen Völkem, die gegen dieſelbe kämpfen, zum Abschluß kommen. Aber durch welche Mittel wird schließlich das erreicht wird, welcher fned- liche oder kampfbarste deutsche Patnot wagt es nur, daran zu denken? Die Zeiten der Monarchieen sind vorüber; auch das größte Gut, was wir germanischen oder roma- nischen zur religiösen oder klaſſischen, zur ratischen oder kunstischen Raub getreten, sobald es keine Ansprüche und Rechte auf einen Platz unter den europäischen Völ- kem geltend macht, darf auf die Sympathieen der all- mächtigen höheren Culturschichte rechnen, welche heute ihre treuen Bundes- genossen gewonnen haben. — Wie die Patnoten aller andem unglücklichen Völker, ſo denn auch die deutschen Patnoten nur in einem aufnchtigen Freundschaftsband- nis mit dieſen fortgeschnttenen und mächtigsten Völkem der Erde das Ziel ihrer Bestrebungen erreichen: Wahnn
